Section 8 of 12 in Chukat — 4 segments
Segment 1
He discoursed on the verse: “Wisdom is good with an inheritance, and an advantage to those who see the sun” (Eccl. 7, 11). Had this matter not been disclosed, I should not have known what it says. “Wisdom is good”: this is the wisdom which is “under the sun”, and a throne is made ready for it. “Wisdom is good with an inheritance”: it is fitting and fair when she rests with Israel, who are her inheritance and her lot, to be bound to her.
Segment 2
But greater praise belongs to “those who see the sun”, to those who have been worthy to be joined with the sun and bound to it; for it is attached to the tree of life, and whoever is attached to it is attached to all, to the life of this world and to the life of the world to come. And this is what is written: “and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it” (Eccl. 7, 12). What is “the advantage of knowledge”? This is the tree of life. And what is its advantage? Wisdom, assuredly, for the Torah issues from the supernal Wisdom.
Segment 3
Further, “Wisdom is good with an inheritance”. “Wisdom is good” assuredly “with an inheritance”: this is the Righteous One of the world, who is the light of the sun; for these two grades sit together, and this is their beauty. But “and an advantage to those who see the sun”: to those who cleave to the sun, the strength of all, the praise of all.
