Section 9 of 27 in Chayei Sara — 7 segments
Segment 1
AND ABRAHAM CAME TO MOURN FOR SARAH AND TO WEEP FOR HER. This is what we have learnt: all seven days a man’s soul goes back to his body and mourns over it. This is what is written, “But his flesh grieves for him, and his soul mourns over him” (Job 14, 22). In this manner, “And Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.” “And Abraham came” — this is the soul; “to mourn for Sarah” — this is the body.
Segment 2
R. Isaac said: At the hour when the soul is worthy and ascends to the place of its greatness, the body lies in peace and rests upon its bed. This is what is written, “He enters into peace, they rest in their beds, each one that walks straight before him” (Is. 57, 2). What is “walks straight before him”? R. Isaac said: The soul walks straight before it, to the place of the Eden that is stored away for it. What is the implication? R. Judah said: From this it is implied — nechochoh is written, with a He. And at the hour when it is not worthy and is fit to receive its punishment, it goes about desolate and visits the body and the grave every day.
Segment 3
R. Jose said: That hip-bone of Kardinutha, when it goes in its rottenness here and there, goes and visits its place for twelve months. So too that soul which is fit to receive punishment goes out into the world and visits its place for twelve months, among the graves and in the world.
