Segment 1א׳

מַאי נְשִׂיא אֱלֹהִים אַתָּה. אָמַר רַבִּי פִּנְחָס קוֹדֶם שֶׁיִּצֵּא הַצַּדִּיק מִן הָעוֹלָם, בַּת קוֹל יוֹצֵּאת בְּכָל יוֹם עַל אוֹתָם הַצַּדִּיקִים בְּגַן עֵדֶן הָכִינוּ מָקוֹם לִפְלוֹנִי שֶׁיָּבֹא לְכָאן. וְעַל כֵּן הֵם אוֹמְרִים מֵאֵת אֱלהִים מִלְּמַעְלָה אַתָּה נָשִׂיא בְּכָל יוֹם בְּתוֹכֵנוּ, בְּמִבְחַר קְבָרֵינוּ בְּמִבְחַר הַצַּדִּיקִים הַצַּדִּיקִים בַּחֲבוּרַת הַמּוּבְחָרִים מְנֵה אוֹתוֹ הַכְנִיסֵהוּ בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן עִמָּנוּ, וְאִישׁ מִמֶּנּוּ לֹא יִמְנַע אֶת הַמִּנְיָן כִּי כוּלָּנוּ שְׂמֵחִים בּוֹ וּמַקְדִּימִים לוֹ שָׁלוֹם.

What is “you are a prince of God”? R. Phineas said: Before the righteous man departs from the world, a heavenly voice goes out every day over those righteous in the Garden of Eden: Prepare a place for so-and-so, who is to come here. Therefore they say: From God above you are a prince among us every day. “In the choicest of our graves” — among the choicest of the righteous, in the company of the chosen; number him, bring him into the reckoning with us, “and no man among us shall withhold” the number, for we are all glad of him and greet him first with peace.

Segment 2ב׳

אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי בֶּן פַּזִּי תָּא חֲזֵי, כֵּיוָן שֶׁהַנְּשָׁמָה פּוֹגַעַת בָּהֶם (ותדון), לְאַחַר כָּךְ פּוֹגַעַת לְאוֹתוֹ הַמַּלְאָךְ הַמְמוּנֶּה עֲלֵיהֶם דִּתְנַן מַלְאָךְ מְמוּנֶּה עַל בָּתֵּי קִבְרֵי וְדוּמָה שְׁמוֹ, והוּא מַכְרִיז בֵּינֵיהֶם בְּכָל יוֹם עַל הַצַּדִּיקִים הָעֲתִידִים לִיכָּנֵס בֵּינֵיהֶם, וּמִיָּד פּוֹגַעַת בּוֹ כְּדֵי לְשַׁכֵּן הַגּוּף בְּהַשְׁקֵט וּבְבִטְחָה וּבִמְנוּחָה וּבַהֲנָאָה, (עלאה) הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל עֶפְרוֹן.

R. Jose b. Pazzi said: Observe, once the soul has met them, afterwards it meets that angel who is appointed over them; for we have learnt, there is an angel appointed over the graves and Duma is his name, and he proclaims among them every day concerning the righteous who are destined to enter among them. And at once it meets him, in order to settle the body in quiet and in confidence and in rest and in enjoyment. This is what is written, “And he spoke with Ephron.”

Segment 3ג׳

אָמַר רַבִּי יִיסָא זֶה הַמַּלְאָךְ הַנִּקְרָא דּוּמָה, וְלָמָּה נִתְכַּנֶּה שְׁמוֹ עֶפְרוֹן, עַל שֶׁהוּא מְמוּנֶּה עַל שׁוֹכְנֵי עָפָר. וְהוּפְקְדוּ בְּיָדוֹ כָּל פִּנְקְסֵי הַצַּדִּיקִים וַחֲבוּרוֹת הַחֲסִידִים הַשּׁוֹכְנִים בֶּעָפָר, וְהוּא עָתִיד לְהוֹצִּיאָם בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן.

R. Jesse said: This is the angel who is called Duma. And why is he surnamed Ephron? Because he is appointed over the dwellers in the dust (afar). And there have been handed into his keeping all the records of the righteous and the companies of the pious who dwell in the dust, and he is destined to bring them out by number.

וְתָאנָא אָמַר רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, לֶעָתִיד לָבֹא כְּשֶׁיִּפְקוֹד הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְהַחֲיוֹת הַמֵּתִים, יִקְרָא לַמַּלְאָךְ הַמְּמוּנֶּה עַל הַקְּבָרוֹת, וְדוּמָה שְׁמוֹ, וְיִתְּבַע מִמֶּנּוּ מִנְיַן כָּל הַמֵּתִים הַצַּדִּיקִים וְהַחֲסִידִים וְאוֹתָם גֵּרֵי הַצֶּדֶק וְשֶׁנֶּהֶרְגוּ עַל שְׁמוֹ, וְהוּא מוֹצִּיאָם בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן כְּמוֹ שֶׁנְּטָלָם (שמות צז ב) בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹן, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (ישעיהו מ׳:כ״ו) הַמּוֹצִּיא בְּמִסְפַּר צְּבָאָם וְגו' אִישׁ לא נֶעְדָר.

And it has been taught: R. Eleazar said, In the time to come, when the Holy One, blessed be He, shall give command to revive the dead, He will call the angel who is appointed over the graves — and Duma is his name — and will demand from him the number of all the dead, the righteous and the pious, and those proselytes of righteousness, and those who were slain for His name; and he will bring them out by number, as he took them by number. This is what is written, “He brings out their host by number… not one is missing” (Is. 40, 26).

וְתָאנָא אָמַר רַבִּי שְׁמוּאֵל בְּרַבִּי יַעֲקֹב, נְפָשׁוֹת הָרְשָׁעִים נְתוּנוֹת בְּיָדוֹ שֶׁל מַלְאָךְ זֶה שֶׁשְּׁמוֹ דוּמָה, לְהַכְנִיסָם בַּגֵּיהִנָּם ולָדוּן שָׁם, וְכֵיוָן שֶׁנִּמְסָרוֹת בְּיָדוֹ, שׁוּב אֵינָן חוֹזְרוֹת עַד שֶׁיִּכָּנְסוּ לַגֵּיהִנֹּם, וְזְה יִרְאַת דָּוִד שֶׁנִּתְיָירֵא כְּשֶׁעָשָׂה אוֹתוֹ עָוֹן שֶׁנְּאֱמַר (תהילים צ״ד:י״ז) לוּלֵי יְיָ עֶזְרָתָה לִי כִּמְעַט שָׁכְנָה דוּמָה נַפְשִׁי. אָמַר רַבִּי יִיסָא הַנְּשָׁמָה פּוֹגַעַת לוֹ לְהַכְנִיס אוֹתוֹ גּוּף עִם שְׁאָר גּוּפוֹת הַצַּדִּיקִים בְּחֶשְׁבּוֹנָם הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וַיְדַבֵּר אֶל עֶפְרוֹן וְגו'.

And it has been taught: R. Samuel son of R. Jacob said, The souls of the wicked are given into the hand of this angel whose name is Duma, to bring them into Gehinnom and to be judged there; and once they are handed into his hand they never return until they enter Gehinnom. And this was David’s fear, when he was afraid after he committed that sin, as it is said, “Unless the Lord had been my help, my soul had soon dwelt in silence (dumah)” (Ps. 94, 17). R. Jesse said: The soul meets him in order to bring that body in with the rest of the bodies of the righteous in their reckoning. This is what is written, “And he spoke with Ephron,” etc.
