זוהר, בראשית ט״וZohar, Bereshit 15

Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח עוֹד רִבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן וְאָמַר (דברים ל״ב:ל״ט) רְאוּ עַתָּה כִּי אֲנִי אֲנִי הוּא וְאֵין אֱלֹהִים עִמָּדִי וְגו'. אָמַר חַבְרַיָּיא שִׁמְעוּ מִלִּין עַתִּיקִין דְּבָּעֵינָא לְגַלָּאָה בָּתַר דְּאִתְיְהִיב רְשׁוּ עִלָּאָה לְמֵימַר. מַאי נִיהוּ דְּאָמַר רְאוּ עַתָּה כִּי אֲנִי אֲנִי הוּא. אֶלָּא דָּא הוּא עִילַּת עַל כָּל עִלָּאִין. הַהוּא דְּאִתְקְרֵי עִלַּת הָעִלּוֹת עִלַּת מֵאִלֵּין עִלּוֹת. דְּלָא יַעֲבִיד חַד מֵאִלֵּין עִלּוֹת שׁוּם עוֹבָדָא עַד דְּנָטִיל רְשׁוּת מֵהַהוּא דְּעֲלֵיהּ. כְּמָה דְאוֹקִימְנָא לְעֵילָא בְּנַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם.

R. Simeon then proceeded, taking as his text: See now that I, I am he, and Elohim is not with me, etc. (Deut. 32, 39). He said: ‘Friends, here are some profound mysteries which I desire to reveal to you now that permission has been given to utter them. Who is it that says, “See now that I, I am he”? This is the Cause which is above all those on high, that which is called the Cause of causes. It is above those other causes, since none of those causes does anything till it obtains permission from that which is above it, as we pointed out above in respect to the expression, “Let us make man”.’

Segment 2ב׳

נַעֲשֶׂה וַדַּאי. עַל תְּרֵין אִתְּמָר. דְּאָמַר דָּא לְהַהוּא דִלְעֵילָא מִינֵּיהּ נַעֲשֶׂה. וְלָא עָבִיד מִדָּעַם אֶלָא בִּרְשׁוּ וַאֲמִירָה מֵהַהוּא דִלְעֵילָא מִינֵּיהּ. וְהַהוּא דִּלְעֵילָא מִנֵּיהּ לָא עָבִיד מִדָּעַם עַד דְּנָטִיל עֵצָה מֵחַבְרֵיהּ. אֲבָל הַהוּא דְאִתְקְרֵי עִלַּת עַל כָּל עִלּוֹת דְּלֵית לְעֵילָא מִנֵּיהּ וְלָא לְתַתָּא שָׁוְה לֵיהּ. כְּמָא דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (ישעיהו מ׳:כ״ה) וְאֶל מִי תְדַמְיוּנִי וְאֶשְׁוֶה יֹאמַר קָדוֹשׁ. אָמַר רְאוּ עַתָּה כִּי אֲנִי אֲנִי הוּא וְאֵין אֱלֹהִים עִמָּדִי, דְּנָטִיל עֵצָה מִנֵּיהּ. כְּגַוְונָא דְהַהוּא דְּאָמַר וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים נַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם.

“Us” certainly refers to two, of which one said to the other above it, “let us make”, nor did it do anything save with the permission and direction of the one above it, while the one above did nothing without consulting its colleague. But that which is called “the Cause above all causes”, which has no superior or even equal, as it is written, “To whom shall ye liken me, that I should be equal?” (Is. 40, 25), said, “See now that I, I am he, and Elohim is not with me”, from whom he should take counsel, like that of which it is written, “and God said, Let us make man”.’

Segment 3ג׳

קָמוּ כֻּלְהוּ חַבְרַיָּיא וְאָמְרוּ רִבִּי הַב לָנָא רְשׁוּ לְמַלָּלָא בְּהַאי אֲתַר. אָמְרוּ וְהָא לָא אוֹקְמַת לְעֵילָא דְּעִלוֹת הָעִלּוֹת אָמַר לְכת"ר נַעֲשֶׂה אָדָם. אָמַר לוֹן הֲווּ שְׁמָעִין אוּדְנַיְיכוּ מַה דְּפוּמְכוֹן מְמַלְּלָן. וְהָא לָא אֲמָרִית לְכוּ הַשְׁתָּא דְּאִית דְּאִתְקְרֵי עִלַּת הָעִלּוֹת וְלָאו אִיהוּ הַהוּא דְאִתְקְרֵי עִלַּת עַל כָּל עִלּוֹת. דְּלְעִלַּת עַל כָּל עִלּוֹת לֵית לֵיהּ תִּנְיָינָא דְּנָטִיל עֵצָה מִנֵּיהּ דְּאִיהוּ יָחִיד קֳדָם כֹּלָּא וְלֵית לֵיהּ שׁוּתָּפָא.

The colleagues here interrupted him and said, ‘Rabbi, allow us to make a remark. Did you not state above that the Cause of causes said to the Sefirah Kether, “Let us make man”?’ He answered, ‘You do not listen to what you are saying. There is something that is called “Cause of causes”, but that is not the “Cause above all causes” which I mentioned, which has no colleague of which it should take counsel, for it is unique, prior to all, and has no partner.
