Segment 1א׳
(במדבר א׳:א׳) וַיְדַבֵּר יְיָ אֶל מֹשֶׁה בְּמִדְבַּר סִינַי בְּאֹהֶל מוֹעֵד וְגוֹ', רִבִּי אַבָּא פָּתַח, (בראשית א׳:כ״ז) וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ וְגוֹ', הַאי קְרָא אִתְּמַר. תָּא חֲזֵי, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּבָרָא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְאָדָם עָבֵד לֵיהּ בְּדִיּוּקְנָא דְּעִלָּאֵי וְתַתָּאֵי, וַהֲוָה כָּלִיל מִכֹּלָּא, וַהֲוָה נְהוֹרֵיהּ נָהִיר, מִסַּיְיפֵי עָלְמָא עַד סַיְיפֵי עָלְמָא. וַהֲווּ דַּחֲלִין קַמֵּיהּ כֹּלָּא.
AND THE LORD SPAKE UNTO MOSES IN THE WILDERNESS OF SINAI, IN THE TENT OF MEETING, ETC. R. Abba cited here the verse: “And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him”, etc. (Gen. 1, 27). ‘We have already explained’, he said, ‘that when the Holy One, blessed be He, created man, He made him in the image of the higher and the lower grades, so that he epitomised the whole, and his light shone forth from one end of the world to the other, and the whole of creation feared him.
Segment 2ב׳
וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּהָא אוּקְמוּהָ, אִית לְאִסְתַּכְּלָא בֵּיהּ בְּהַאי קְרָא, וַיִּבְרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם בְּצַלְמוֹ בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא אוֹתוֹ, כֵּיוָן דְּאָמַר בְּצַלְמוֹ, מַאי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים בָּרָא אוֹתוֹ. אֶלָּא וַדַּאי תְּרֵין דַּרְגִּין דִּכְלִילָן דְּכַר וְנוּקְבָּא, חַד לִדְכַר, וְחַד לְנוּקְבָּא.
It is necessary, however, to look deeper into this verse. For since Scripture says “And God created man in his own image”, why repeat “in the image of God created he him”? But what it signifies is a two-foldness of grades, of male and female comprised within the man,

וּבְגִין כַּךְ דּוּ פַּרְצוּפִין הֲווֹ ודַּאי, וְסֵיפָא דִּקְרָא אוֹכַח, דִּכְתִּיב זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בָּרָא אוֹתָם. וְכָלִיל הֲוָה מִכָּל סִטְרִין (נ"א מתרין סטרין) וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּנוּקְבָּא אֲחִידַת בְּסִטְרוֹי. הָא הִיא נָמֵי כְּלִילָא מִתְּרֵין סִטְרִין, לְמֶהֱוִי שְׁלִים בְּכֹלָּא.
which made him a duality of prosopa, so that he was complete in all respects,
