Segment 1

As they were going, R. Abba said: ‘We have learnt that for eleven things the plague of leprosy comes upon a man, and these are they: for idolatry, for cursing the Name, for fornication, for stealing, for slander, for false witness, for perversion of justice, for false swearing, for encroaching on the property of a neighbour, for harbouring evil designs, and for fomenting quarrels between brothers. Some add also, for the evil eye.’

Segment 2

Idolatry — from where? As it is written, “And Moses saw the people, that they were broken loose, for Aaron had let them loose” (Ex. 32, 25). What is “that they were broken loose”? That they were smitten with leprosy. It is written here, “that they were broken loose”, and it is written there, “And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and the hair of his head shall go loose” (Lev. 13, 45). And for cursing the Name, as it is written, “This day will the Lord deliver you into my hand” (I Sam. 17, 46), and it is written, “And the priest shall shut him up” (Lev. 13, 5).
