Segment 1א׳

וְדָוִד מַלְכָּא אָמַר, (תהילים י״א:ב׳) כִּי הִנֵּה הָרְשָׁעִים יִדְרְכוּן קֶשֶׁת כּוֹנְנוּ וְגוֹ'. וְאַף עַל גַּב דְּהַאי קְרָא הָא אוֹקְמוּהָ, עַל שֶׁבְנָא וְיוֹאָח מְמָנָן דְּחִזְקִיָה אִתְּמַר, אֲבָל הַאי קְרָא עַל סָמָאֵ"ל וְסִיעָתֵיהּ אוּף הָכִי אִתְּמַר, דְּכָל עוֹבָדוֹי וְעֵיטוֹי עַל יִשְׂרָאֵל נִינְהוּ. בָּלָק וּבִלְעָם הַהוּא אֹרַח מַמָּשׁ נַקְטוּ, וְהָא אִתְּמַר דַּחֲבוּרָא בִּישָׁא עַבְדוּ. אַמְרוּ, עֲמָלֵ"ק: עָ"ם לָ"ק, עַמָּא דְּלַקָא לוֹן, כְּחִוְיָא דְּמָחֵי בִּזְנָבָא דִּילֵיהּ, הָא אֲנָן יַתִּיר. בָּלָ"ק: בָּ"א לָ"ק. אָתָא מַאן דְּלָקֵי לוֹן כִּרְעוּתֵיהּ. בִּלְעָ"ם: בַּ"ל עָ"ם, לֵית עַמָּא, וְלֵית רַעְיָא. שְׁמָא דִּילָן גָּרִים לְשֵׁיצָאָה לוֹן וּלְאַעְקְרָא לְהוּ מֵעָלְמָא.

Similarly the words of King David: “For lo, the wicked bend the bow, they make ready their arrow upon the string” (Ps. 11, 2), although explained as referring to Shebna and Joach, the officers of Hezekiah, can also be applied to this Samael and his company, whose whole object is to harm Israel.

Segment 2ב׳

וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא חָשִׁיב בְּגַוְונָא אַחֲרָא שְׁמֵיהוֹן, בְּבָלָק בַּ"ל, בְּבִלְעָם בַּ"ל, הָא בִּלְבֵּ"ל. מַה אַתְוָון אִשְׁתָּאֲרוּ עֵמֶ"ק, בִּלְבֵּל עִמְקָא דְּמַחֲשָׁבָה דִּלְהוֹן, דְּלָא יִשְׁלְטוּן בְּעָלְמָא, וְלָא יִשְׁתַּאֲרוּן בְּעָלְמָא.

Balak and Balaam chose that path, and, as we have said, made an evil partnership.’

Segment 3ג׳

אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, אֶלְעָזָר, יָאוּת אַמְרַת, אֲבָל בָּלָק, תִּפַּח רוּחֵיהּ בְּגֵיהִנָּם. וּבִלְעָם יִשְׁתַּחֲקוּן תַּמָּן גַרְמוֹי וְרוּחֵיהּ. וְהָכִי הוּא עֵיטָא בִּישָׁא נַטְלוּ עַל פַּטְרוֹנָא. עַל הַאי כֹּה, דְּחָשִׁיבוּ לְאַעְקְרָא לְהַאי כֹּה, וְחָשִׁיבוּ לְסִטְרָא בִּישָׁא לְסַלְּקָא לֵיהּ בְּפוּמָא וּבְעוֹבָדָא.

R. Simeon said: ‘Let Balak and Balaam rot in hell. They took evil counsel together against the Protector, whom they thought to remove by means of deed and word.

Segment 4ד׳

אָמַר הַהוּא רָשָׁע, קַדְמָאֵי אִשְׁתְּדָּלוּ וְלָא יָכִילוּ. דּוֹר הַפְלָגָה אִשְׁתְּדָּלוּ, וְלָא יָכִילוּ. עָבְדוּ עוֹבָדָא, וּפוּמָא חָסֵר מִנַּיְיהוּ, דְּלִישָׁנְהוֹן אִתְבַּלְבָּל, וְלָא יָכִיל. אֲבָל אַנְתְּ, הָא פּוּמָךְ שַׁנָּן, וְלִישָׁנָךְ מְתֻּתְקָּן בִּתְרֵין סִטְרִין אִלֵּין, אֵת אֲשֶׁר תְּבָרֵךְ מְבוֹרָךְ, ואֲשֶׁר תָּאוֹר יוּאָר, הַהוּא סִטְרָא דְּאַתְּ בָּעֵי לְסַלְּקָא לְעֵילָּא בְּפוּמָךְ וְלִישָׁנָךְ, אִסְתְּלִיק. וְהַהוּא סִטְרָא דְּאַתְּ בָּעֵי לְמֵילַט, בְּחֵילָא דְּפוּמָךְ תֵּילוֹט (וסטרא קמך) וְכֹלָּא בָּךְ תַּלְיָיא דְּהָא עוֹבָדָא אִתְתָּקַּן. אֲבָל בְּמִלָּה תַּלְיָיא כֹּלָּא, וְעַל דָּא (ס"א בעובדא) כְּעוֹבָדָא דְּנָחָשׁ אֲנָא אַתְקִין. וְאַנְתְּ תַּשְׁלִים כֹּלָּא בְּפוּמָךְ, הַהוּא סִטְרָא דִּתְּבָרֵךְ מְבוֹרָךְ, וְהַהוּא סִטְרָא דְּתָּאוֹר יוּאָר.

Said that wicked one: The ancients tried and did not succeed. The generation of the Tower of Babel tried but could not, because though they had deeds the word of the mouth was lacking, as their tongues were confused. But thy mouth is sharp and thy tongue is ready for either course. That side which thou desirest to remove is removed by thy mouth and tongue, and that side which thou desirest to curse by the power of thy mouth is cursed.

וְהוּא לָא יָדַע דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא (איוב י״ב:כ׳) מֵסִיר שָׂפָה לְנֶאֱמָנִים וְטָעַם זְקֵנִים יִקַּח, וְכֹלָּא בִּרְשׁוּתֵיהּ קַיְּימָא. מֵסִיר שָׂפָה לְנֶאֱמָנִים, אֵלּוּ דּוֹר הַפְלָגָה, דְּבִלְבֵּל לִישָׁנֵהוֹן, דְּלָא יִשְׁלְטוּן בְּמִלָּה כְּלַל. דִּכְתִּיב, (בראשית י״א:ז׳) אֲשֶׁר לֹא יִשְׁמְעוּ אִישׁ שְׂפַת רֵעֵהוּ. וְטַעַם זְקֵנִים יִקָּח, אֵלּוּ בִּלְעָם וּבָלָק דְּתַרְוַויְיהוּ הֲווֹ בְּעֵיטָא חֲדָא, דִּכְתִּיב וַיַּעַל בָּלָק וּבִלְעָם פַּר וְאַיִל בַּמִּזְבֵּחַ.

And he did not know that the Holy One, blessed be He, “removes the speech of the trusty and takes away the discernment of the elders” (Job 12, 20), and that all stands in His power. “He removes the speech of the trusty”: these are the generation of the dispersion, whose tongue He confounded, so that they should have no power in speech at all, as it is written, “that they may not understand one another’s speech” (Gen. 11, 7). “And takes away the discernment of the elders”: these are Balaam and Balak, who were both of one counsel, as it is written, “And Balak and Balaam offered a bullock and a ram on the altar”.
