Segment 1

The sages have taught: when R. Simeon ben Yohai fell sick, R. Phineas and R. Hiya and R. Abahu came in before him. They said to him: he who is the foundation of the world lies sick. He said to them: the court above does not look into my judgement, for I have seen that I am not delivered over to an angel or to a judge above; for I am not like the rest of the sons of men.

Segment 2

Rather, this judgement of mine — the Holy One, blessed be He, judges it, and not His court. And this is what David said in his petition before Him, (Ps. 43, 1) “Judge me, O God, and plead my cause.” And so Solomon said, (I Kings 8, 59) “to maintain the cause of His servant” — He alone, and no other.

Segment 3

For we have learnt: when a man lies sick, the court above look into his case; some of them incline to the scale of merit, showing the merit of the man, and some of them incline to the scale of guilt, showing the guilt of the man. And a man does not come out of the judgement as he would wish.
