Section 6 of 10 in Addenda, Volume II — 33 segments
Segment 1
It has been taught. R. Jose said: The rod was engraved on two sides with the Holy Name — one side of mercy and judgement, in engraved letters, and one side of judgement within judgement, “a serpent upon a rock.”
Segment 2
Observe: it is written, “But lift up your rod, and stretch out your hand over the sea” (Ex. 14, 16). What is “and stretch out”? As if to say: incline it to that one side which is engraved with mercy and judgement. And it is written, “And Moses stretched out his hand,” and it is not written, “And Moses sent forth his hand” — as if to say, he turned it aside to one side.
Segment 3
And if you should say that “a serpent upon a rock” was engraved upon it before this — rather, it was engraved at the bush, as it is written, “And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent” (Ex. 4); at that hour “a serpent upon a rock” was engraved.
