“And God remembered Rachel.” Of Sarah, visiting is written; and of Rachel, remembering is written. Why? Because “remember” is imprinted in Jacob, who is the covenant of peace, when Joseph was made. And by what? When he took the ox with him, so that it should not strengthen the other side. And therefore Joseph is called firstborn, for that ox which he took is assuredly “the firstling of his ox”; and that ox is shor tam (a harmless ox), and Jacob is ish tam (a whole-hearted man) — a lord and a ruler, the master of the house, in whom that harmless ox dwells.
