Segment 1א׳

רַעֲיָא מְהֵימְנָא וַיַּחֲלוֹם וְהִנֵּה סוּלָם מֻצָּב אַרְצָּה. וְהִנֵּה סוּלָם דָא צְּלוֹתָא, מֻצָּב אַרְצָּה, דְּמָצְּלָאן בְּנֵי נָשָׁא לֵיהּ בְּאַרְעָא דְּאִיהִי שְׁכִינְתָּא וּמַטָא לִשְׁמַיָּא דְּאִיהוּ קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא דְאִתְמָר בֵּיה (מלכים א ח׳:ל״ב) וְאַתָּה תִּשְׁמַע הַשָׁמַיִם וְרָזָא דְּמִלָה (תהילים ח׳:ב׳) יְהוָֹ"ה אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ וגוֹ'.

Ra'aya Meheimna. “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth.” “And behold a ladder” — this is prayer. “Set up on the earth”: for men pray to Him on the earth, which is the Shekinah; and it reaches to heaven, which is the Holy One, blessed be He, of whom it is said, (I Kings 8, 32) “and You shall hear in heaven.” And the mystery of the matter: (Ps. 8, 2) “O Lord, our Lord, how glorious is Your name in all the earth,” and so forth.

Segment 2ב׳

וּבְזִמְנָא דְּמוֹדָע לוֹן קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא וּשְׁכִנְתֵּיהּ דְּסָלְקָא בְּהַהוּא צְּלוֹתָא, מִיָד וְהִנֵּה מַלְאֲכֵי אֱלֹהִים עוֹלִים וְיוֹרְדִים בּוֹ. בּוֹ בְּהַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ. כֻּלְּהוּ פַּתְחִין גַדְפַיְיהוּ לְקָבְּלָא שְׁכִינְתָּא בְּהַהִיא צְּלוֹתָא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (יחזקאל א׳:י״א) וְכַנְפֵיהֶם פְּרוּדוֹת מִלְמַעְלָה וְהַאי אִיהוּ עוֹלִים שְׁכִינְתָּא עַל גַדְפַיְיהוּ וְיוֹרְדִים בּוֹ. מָאי בּוֹ, בְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא נָחִית עָלַיְיהוּ לְקָבְּלָא שְׁכִינְתֵּיהּ וּמְיַיחֵד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בֵּיה בְּהַהוּא בַּר נָשׁ בִּצְּלוֹתֵיהּ.

And at the time when the Holy One, blessed be He, makes known to them His Shekinah, who ascends in that prayer — at once, “and behold the angels of God ascending and descending in him.” “In him” — in that man. They all spread their wings toward the Shekinah in that prayer. This is what is written, (Ezek. 1, 11) “and their wings were separated above.” And this is “ascending” — the Shekinah upon their wings. “And descending in him.” What is “in him”? In the Holy One, blessed be He. For the Holy One, blessed be He, comes down upon them to receive His Shekinah, and the Holy One, blessed be He, is united in him, in that man, in his prayer.

דִשְׁכִינְתָּא אִיהִי מִצְּוָה כְּלִילָא בְּשֵׁם יְהוָֹ"ה אִיהִי חַיָּה דִילֵיהּ. וּמִצְּוָה בְּלא מַחֲשָׁבָה לֵית לָהּ סְלִיקוּ. וּמַחֲשָׁבָה אִיהוּ אָדָ"ם יוֹ"ד הֵ"א וָא"ו הֵ"א תִפְאֶרְ"ת. מִצְּוָה מַלְכוּתָא כְּלִילָא מֵאַרְבַּע חֵיוָון דְמֶרְכַּבְתָּא, כְּלִילָא מֵאַרְבַּע אַתְוון. אִיהִי נוּקְבָא דִילֵיהּ, אַנְפִּין דִילֵיהּ, אַנְפּוֹי דְּרַחֲמֵי. בְּגִינָהּ אֲמֵינָא (שמות ל״ג:ט״ו) אִם אֵין פָּנֶיךָ הוֹלְכִים וְגוֹ'.

For the Shekinah is a commandment comprised in the Name Yod-He-Vau-He; she is His chayah. And a commandment without thought has no ascent. And thought is Adam, Yod-Vau-Daleth, He-Aleph, Vau-Aleph-Vau, He-Aleph: tiferet. Commandment: malchut, comprised of the four living creatures of the chariot, comprised of four letters. She is His female, His face, His face of mercy. For her sake I said, (Ex. 33, 15) “If Your presence does not go,” and so forth.

Segment 4ד׳

וּמִסִּטְרָא דְצַּדִיק אִתְקַרְיָא אֲחוֹרוֹי חַיָּה כְּלִילָא חָ"י חוּלְיָין דְּאֲחוֹרוֹי דְּבָּר נָשׁ, דְּדָמֵי לְשִׁדְרָה דְּבֵיהּ חָ"י חוּלְיָין. אִיהִי אָחוֹר לְעוֹבַדָא דְּבְּרֵאשִׁית וְקֵדֶם לְמַחֲשָׁבָה דְאִתְמָר בָּהּ, עֲלָהּ בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה. מָה דְּלָאו הֲכִי בַּאָדָם, דְּאֲחוֹר דְּעֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע דְּאִיהוּ אָחוֹר לְמַעֲשֶׂה בְּרִאשִׁית, וקֵדֶם לְפּוּרְעֲנוּת.

And from the side of the Righteous One she is called His back: the chayah, comprising the eighteen vertebrae that are at the back of a man, which is like the spine in which are eighteen vertebrae. She is behind in relation to the work of creation, and before in relation to thought, of which it is said: it arose in thought. Which is not so with man, with the back of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, which is behind in relation to the work of creation and before in relation to the punishment.

קָמוּ תַּנָּאִין וְאֱמוֹרָאִין וְאָמְרוּ רַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא בְּרִיךְ אֲנְתְ לֵאֱלָהָא עִלָּאָה, הוּא יְקָם לָךְ בַּעוּתָךְ בְּכֹלָּא. קָם סָבָא עִלָּאָה בְּינֵיהוֹן וְאָמַר רַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא בָּךְ אִתְקָיָּים הַאי קְרָא דְאִתְמָר (ישעיהו ס״ב:ז׳) וְאַל תִּתְנוּ דֹּמִי לוֹ דְּהָא עִלָּאִין וְתַתָּאִין מֵקַנְנֵי בְּצּוּלְמָא דִּידָךְ מַשִׁירְיָין דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא דְּאִינוּן מְתִיבְתָּא עִלָּאָה וּמַשִּׁירְיָין דְּמַטְרוֹנִיתָא דְּאִינוּן מִמְתִּיבְתָא תַתָּאָה עֲלָךְ אִתְמָר וְהִנֵּה מַלְאֲכֵי אֱלהִים עוֹלִים וְיוֹרְדִים בּוֹ

The Tannaim and Amoraim rose and said: Faithful Shepherd, blessed are you to the supernal God; may He fulfil your petition in everything. A supernal Elder rose among them and said: Faithful Shepherd, in you is fulfilled this verse that was said, (Isa. 62, 7) “and give Him no rest.” For the upper and the lower nest in your image: the hosts of the Holy One, blessed be He, which are the celestial Academy, and the hosts of the Matrona, which are of the lower Academy. Of you it is said, “And behold the angels of God ascending and descending in him.”
