Segment 1

The Holy One, blessed be He, has seven holy forms, and all of them have their counterpart in man, as it is said, “in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them.” And these are they: the right thigh and the left; the right hand and the left; the body and the covenant — behold, six. But you said seven! The seventh is in his wife, “and they shall be one flesh.”

Segment 2

A parable: to what is the matter like? To a king who purposed in his heart to plant in his garden nine male trees, and they were all palms. He said: When they are all of one kind, it is not possible for them to endure. What did he do? He planted a citron among them; and it is one of those nine that he purposed should be male. And the citron — what is it? Female. And this is what is written, (Lev. 23, 40) “the fruit of goodly trees, branches of palm-trees.” (Thus far.)

Segment 3

“Male and female created He them.” Is it possible to say so? Is it not written, “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him,” and so forth; and afterwards, “I will make him a help meet for him”; “And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place”? Rather say: formation is written, and making is written of them, and creation is written of them. Making — as it is written, “male and female created He them” — at the time when He set the soul upon the body and gathered all together. And how do we know that this forming is a term of gathering? As it is written, “And the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every fowl of the air, and brought them to the man.” And this is what is written of the man: “male and female created He them, and blessed them.” (Thus far.)
