Section 37 of 52 in Addenda, Volume I — 15 segments
Segment 1
“And God said: Let there be light.” And R. Johanan said: There were two great lights, as it is written, “and there was light”; and of it was it said, “that it was good.” And the Holy One, blessed be He, took the one and stored it away for the righteous in the future to come, as it is written, “Oh how abundant is Your goodness, which You have laid up for those who fear You; which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, in the sight of the sons of men.”
Segment 2
This teaches that no creature can look upon the first light, as it is written, “And God saw the light, that it was good”; “And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” The Holy One, blessed be He, saw all that He had made; He saw “very good” — shining and bright. And He took of His good light, and comprised in it the thirty-two paths of wisdom, and gave it to this world.
Segment 3
And this is what is written, (Prov. 4, 2) “For I have given you good doctrine; do not forsake My Torah.” You must say: this is the treasury of the Oral Law. And the Holy One, blessed be He, said: If they keep this attribute in this world — for this attribute is reckoned within the compass of this world, and it is the Oral Law — they will merit the life of the world to come, which is the hidden good. And what is it? It is the might of the Holy One, blessed be He…
