BERESHITH (in the beginning) is the mystery of chochmah. BARA (created) — the supernal hidden one that is not known (keter). ELOHIM is binah. ETH is the sum of chesed and gevurah. HASHAMAYIM (the heaven) is tiferet. VE-ETH is the sum of netzach and hod. The Vau of VE-ETH is to include the Righteous One. HA-ARETZ (the earth) is the sum of the Community of Israel, the land of the living. And afterwards, the particulars of the Torah, in the mystery of those supernal days. BERESHITH is a saying, corresponding to the grade of chochmah; and it is called RESHITH.
Segment 2
AND GOD SAID: LET THERE BE LIGHT — corresponding to the grade of chesed, which is on the right; for from there light goes out to all the worlds, in the mystery of day. This is what is written, (Ps. 52, 3) “The mercy of God endures all the day.” And corresponding to it below is Abraham, who is held fast in this portion. And therefore it is written here “one day,” and here (Ezek. 33) “Abraham was one”; and of him it is written, (Isa. 41, 2) “Who has roused up one from the east” — in the mystery of the light that goes out from the east.
Segment 3
And observe: you will not find among all the seven righteous who are held fast above, in the mystery of their names, an Aleph at the beginning, save Abraham and Aaron, who are held fast in this chesed; for the priests came from the side of chesed. And even though Aaron is held fast in hod, he is held fast in chesed also; and Moses, even though he is held fast in netzach, is held fast in tiferet also — to show that all is one. And Abraham is the head of all the righteous, and from him they were divided below, for he is at the right hand of the Holy One, blessed be He, and is called priest. This is what is written, (Ps. 110, 4) “You are a priest for ever after the manner of Melchizedek.” And Aaron, because he is a priest, is held fast in this; but his own grade is hod.
