“And it came to pass, when Abram came into Egypt” — it should have said “when they came”; and where was Sarah? But Abraham put her into a chest and closed it upon her. When he reached Egypt they said to him: Pay the toll. He said: I will pay the toll. They said to him: You are carrying vessels. He said: I will pay for vessels. They said to him: You are carrying silk. He said: I will pay for silk. They said to him: You are carrying pearls. He said to them: I will pay the toll for pearls. They said to him: It is not possible; rather, open the chest and let us see what is within it. When they opened the chest, the land of Egypt was lit up from her light. This is what is written, “and the Egyptians beheld the woman,” etc. (Ibid.). R. Judah said: “And it came to pass, when they came into Egypt” — so it should have said; but rather, in the chest, and so forth.
