“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”: the initial letters of et ha-shamayim ve-et ha-arets are Aleph-Heh-Vav-Heh, for by it heaven and earth were created. By Aleph-Heh the heavens were created; by Vav-Heh the earth was created (a variant reads: they were created), and all that is in it. And He gives desire to all the trees and grasses that are in the earth. And this is what they said: there is no herb below that has not an appointed one over it above, who strikes it and says to it, Grow! — as it is said, “Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion in the earth?” (Job 38, 33)
