Segment 1

It has been taught: it is written, “The voice of the Lord makes the hinds to travail” (Ps. 29, 9). “Hinds” — “hind” is written defectively: this is the hind of the field. Another explanation of “the hinds of the field”: for it has been taught that at midnight, at the hour when the Holy One, blessed be He, enters the Garden of Eden to take delight with the righteous, this voice goes forth and brings travail upon all those hinds that surround the precious holy throne. This is what is written, “threescore mighty men are about it” (S.S. 3, 7). Another explanation of “makes the hinds to travail”: as it says, “His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent” (Job 26, 13). “And strips the forests bare”: as it says, “in the honeycomb” (I Sam. 12), and it is written, “I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey” (S.S. 5, 1); and He suckles them as a mother suckles her children.
