Se’if 1א׳
The measure of the margin: below, four fingerbreadths by the thumb; and above, three; and between each column and the next, two. Therefore he must leave at the beginning of each sheet and at its end the breadth of a fingerbreadth, and enough for the stitching; and so it turns out that when he stitches the sheets together there will be, between each column and the next throughout the whole scroll, the breadth of two fingerbreadths. And between one line and the next, the full breadth of a line. And between each chumash (one of the five books of the Torah) and the next, four lines left empty without writing, and he begins the chumash at the beginning of the fifth line. And at the beginning of the scroll and at its end he leaves enough to roll it around the rod, and two fingerbreadths more that shall remain between the rod and the column.
Se’if 2ב׳
He shall not shrink the writing on account of the space below and above, nor on account of the space between one parashah (section of the Torah) and the next.
Se’if 3ג׳
If a word of five letters fell to him, he shall not write two within the column and three outside the column; rather he writes three within the column and two outside the column. And if there is not room to write three within the column, he leaves the place blank, and he shall not draw out the letters to make them larger than their fellows in order to fill up to the end of the column (Hagahot Maimoni in the name of the Ramach). And a word of three letters — he may write two of it outside the column, even though the lesser part of it is within. But if it has only two letters, he shall not write it outside the column. Hagah [Rema]: And even if the two letters are from a long word and look like a word by itself, he shall not write them on the margin (Beit Yosef in the name of Mordechai, who wrote so in the name of the Semak).
