A piece that absorbed a forbidden food, and there is not in it sixty to nullify it, that fell into a pot: it forbids only according to the reckoning of the forbidden food that is in it. For if there is in what is in the pot, joined together with the piece itself, sixty against the forbidden food that is absorbed in it, what is in the pot is permitted; but the piece itself is forbidden, since the forbidden food that is in it is not exuded from it entirely (Rashba, and Tosafot, chapter "Gid ha-nasheh", folio 100, and the Rosh and Mordechai there, and Semag, folio 51, column 3, and Sefer haTerumah, siman 52; and so it is in the language of Rabbeinu Efrayim himself that is in Chiddushei Rashba, folio 118, and at the end of the book of Raavan; and so wrote Maharshal, chapter "Gid ha-nasheh", siman 57, and all the later authorities) — and so is the main ruling, and not as he wrote above, siman 92, that even that piece is permitted. This is not so in the case of a thing that mingles and dissolves: for if blood or the like fell into gravy of permitted food and forbade it because of its smallness, and afterwards the permitted gravy increased until there is in the whole of it sixty to nullify the whole of the blood, it is permitted, for the whole mingles and is mixed together. Hagah [Rema]: And according to what they have the practice to say in all the prohibitions, that a piece becomes nevelah (a forbidden thing in its own right, as carrion is), there is no distinction between a moist thing and a dry thing save with regard to this: that if what has already been forbidden is a dry thing and there is sixty against it, the piece that was forbidden first remains in its prohibition and must be removed from there if he recognises it; and if he does not recognise it, it is nullified, if it is not a piece fit to be set before guests with honour. And if it is a moist thing, the whole is permitted, since there is sixty against what was forbidden first. And see above, siman 92 and 99.

A piece in which there is fat, that was cooked in a pot in which there is sixty to nullify the fat: he must take care not to remove anything from the pot while the forbidden piece is within it, for we are concerned lest it be left to the last, at the hour when there is not in the pot sixty to nullify the fat. And also he shall not take it out first, for the fat that is in it would forbid it. And what is its remedy? He shall leave it until the pot cools. Hagah [Rema]: And according to what we hold, that a piece becomes nevelah, he removes the forbidden piece from there, and the rest is permitted (his own opinion).
