Two balconies projecting from two upper storeys, one over against the other: if he laid a board four handbreadths wide between them, it is like a doorway, and they make an eruv (the loaf set aside to join separate households into one for the Sabbath) together. Hagah [Rema]: And if the distance between them is not four, then even without a board the law is the same (the Maggid, chapter 3). And if they wished, each one makes an eruv for itself. But if they were not one over against the other — one set back toward the east and the other toward the west — they cannot make an eruv together. And likewise if one was higher than the other, it is not reckoned a doorway. And this applies where they are three handbreadths apart; but if they are within three of each other, whether in distance or in height, it is properly reckoned as a doorway.
