He reads upon his bed the first passage of the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) and blesses: "who casts the cords of sleep upon my eyes" and so on. Hagah [Rema]: And he should recite the Shema close to his bed; and one does not eat or drink or speak after the Shema that is upon his bed, but he should sleep at once, as it is said: "Speak in your heart upon your bed, and be still, selah" (Psalms 4:5) (Kol Bo, and Rokeach, and Rabbeinu Yerucham, netiv 2, part 2); and see above, siman 63, whether it is permitted to recite it while he is lying down. And if he recited the Shema and cannot sleep at once, then he recites it again several times, one after another, until he sinks into sleep, and so that his reciting should be close to his sleep (Hagahot Maimoni, chapter 7). And one does not bless over the Shema that is upon his bed (Hagahot Maimoni, chapter 7, and Beit Yosef in the name of the Tosafot, chapter "All flesh"). And he says: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High" (Psalms 91:1-16); and he says: "Lord, how many are my foes" up to "Salvation belongs to the Lord" (Psalms 3:2-9); and he says: "Blessed is the Lord by day, blessed is the Lord by night, blessed is the Lord when we lie down, blessed is the Lord when we rise up"; "And the Lord said to the Satan: The Lord rebuke you, O Satan" and so on (Zechariah 3:2); "The Lord is your keeper" and so on, up to "from this time forth and for ever" (Psalms 121:5-8); "Into Your hand I commit my spirit" and so on (Psalms 31:6); "The Lord bless you" and so on, up to "and give you peace" (Numbers 6:22-27); and he says Hashkiveinu ("Cause us to lie down") up to near the closing blessing.

When he takes off his shirt, he should not turn it over from below upwards, for if so his body is found naked; rather, he should take it off over his head and cover himself with his sheet from beneath, and get into his bed.
