Employing Labor· siman 337
Se’if 1א׳
A worker who does labor in a food-related industry may eat from what he does, even if he doesn’t work on it with his arms and legs, but only carries it on his shoulders, it is forbidden to prevent him from eating.
Se’if 2ב׳
In what case are these words said, that he eats? When he works with what grows from the ground: with what is attached, at the time of the completion of the work — for example, one who gathers grapes, or harvests olives, or plucks figs, or cuts dates; and with what is detached from the ground, before the end of the work is completed that renders it liable with its last liability. But one who works with a thing that is not of what grows from the ground — for example, the one who milks, and the one who churns (that is, one who draws the butter out of the milk, the Aruch; and some say, one who curdles the milk with rennet so that it sets, Rashi, chapter 10 of tractate Sabbath), and the one who makes cheese — does not eat. And likewise one who works with what is attached, not at the time of the completion of the work — for example, one who hoes among the vines, or covers the roots of the trees; and even one who weeds among onions and garlic, for example, pulling out the small ones from among the large — may not eat of them; and even though it is the completion of the work of the small ones, the main work is for the sake of the large ones, to give them room, and their work is not yet completed.
Se’if 3ג׳
One who works with what is detached after its work has been completed for the tithe — for example, one who separates (that is, they have stuck to one another and he separates them) dates and dried figs — does not eat; for with any thing that has no further liability after the liability of the tithe, such as figs and grapes, once they have become liable for the tithe he does not eat of them. But with a thing that has a further liability, such as wheat that stands to be made into bread, which is liable for challah, he eats until he completes its work so that it becomes liable for challah, and from then on he does not eat.
