Scroll of Esther and Hanukkah 3
Chapter 3 of 4 in Scroll of Esther and Hanukkah — 14 halachot
Halacha 1
In the days of the Second Temple, when the kings of Greece decreed decrees upon Israel and abolished their religion and did not leave them free to occupy themselves with Torah and with the commandments, and stretched out their hand against their money and against their daughters, and entered the Sanctuary and made breaches in it and defiled the pure things — Israel was greatly distressed because of them, and they oppressed them with a great oppression, until the God of our fathers had mercy upon them and delivered them from their hand and saved them. And the sons of the Hasmonean, the High Priests, prevailed and killed them and delivered Israel from their hand; and they set up a king from among the priests, and the kingship returned to Israel for more than two hundred years, until the second destruction.
Halacha 2
And when Israel prevailed over their enemies and destroyed them — it was on the twenty-fifth of the month of Kislev — they entered the Sanctuary and did not find pure oil in the Temple except one flask, and there was in it enough to kindle for one day only; and they kindled from it the lamps of the arrangement for eight days, until they pressed olives and brought out pure oil.
Halacha 3
And for this reason the Sages of that generation ordained that these eight days, whose beginning is the twenty-fifth of Kislev, should be days of rejoicing and of Hallel, and that lamps should be kindled on them in the evening at the entrances of the houses, on each and every night of the eight nights, to show and to reveal the miracle. And these days are the ones called Chanukah, and they are forbidden for eulogy and for fasting, like the days of Purim. And the kindling of the lamps on them is a commandment from the words of the Scribes, like the reading of the Scroll.
