Defilement by a Corpse 20
Chapter 20 of 25 in Defilement by a Corpse — 8 halachot
Halacha 1
Three things protect in the tent of a corpse: a tightly sealed cover, tents, and things swallowed. Things swallowed protect pure things so that they should not become impure, and they also hold back the impurity so that it should not go out and convey impurity. But a tightly sealed cover and tents protect pure things so that they should not become impure, and they do not hold back the impurity from going out and conveying impurity to others. How so? An impure house in which there is a vessel closed with a tightly sealed cover — all that is within the vessel is pure. So too if there was a tent within the house, all the vessels that are within the tent are pure. But if an olive's bulk of a corpse was placed in vessels and closed over with a tightly sealed cover and he brought it into the house, the house is impure. So too a tent within a tent, with an olive's bulk of a corpse in the inner tent — all the vessels that are in the outer tent are impure.
Halacha 2
But things swallowed protect pure things and hold back the impurity. How so? A dog that ate the flesh of a corpse and entered the house — the house is pure. If it swallowed a ring, and even a person who swallowed a ring and entered the tent of a corpse — although he has become impure with a seven-day impurity, the ring is pure. So too all things swallowed by a wild animal, or a domestic animal, or birds, or fish, protect so long as they are alive. And if they died with the flesh of the corpse, or the vessels, within their bowels, these are as though they were not swallowed.
Halacha 3
If the greater part of one organ was slaughtered in a bird, or the greater part of two organs in a domestic animal, then although they still twitch they are as dead, and they do not protect the vessels swallowed within them, and they do not hold back the impurity that is within their bowels from conveying impurity.
