The Sages of the Talmud

רבי יוסי הכהן Rabbi Yose HaKohen

Tanna · 2nd generation (c. 80–110 CE) — named 9 times across 5 tractates of the Bavli.

Tanna · 2nd generation×9 named in the Bavli5 tractates

Rabbi Yose HaKohen, of the second tannaitic generation, was one of the five students of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai whose praises his master enumerated, and the one he called pious. His word in Avot is that a man hold his fellow's money as dear as his own and prepare himself to learn Torah, since it is not an inheritance.

He is named nine times across five tractates, spread evenly, and he appears with Rabbi Zechariah ben HaKatzav in the testimony the Mishnah records from the two of them together about a woman taken as a pledge at Ashkelon.

One of Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai's five.
