רבן יוחנן בן זכאי Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai
Tanna · 1st generation (c. 10–80 CE) — named 116 times across 25 tractates of the Bavli.
Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai, of the first tannaitic generation, was the youngest of Hillel's students and the man who carried the tradition through the destruction. Borne out of besieged Jerusalem in a coffin, he asked Vespasian for Yavneh and its sages, and there founded the academy in which Jewish life was rebuilt around Torah and prayer in place of the Temple. The ordinances he enacted — the shofar on Shabbat, the taking of the lulav all seven days, the fixing of testimony about the new moon — are the practical shape of that decision.
His five students were Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Chananya, Rabbi Yose the priest, Rabbi Shimon ben Netanel and Rabbi Elazar ben Arach. It was said of him that no man ever greeted him first, not even a stranger in the market.
Founded the academy at Yavneh after the destruction.
