הלל Hillel the Elder

Zugot · 5th Pair (c. 170 BCE – 10 CE) — named 203 times across 28 tractates of the Bavli.

Zugot · 5th Pair×203 named in the Bavli28 tractates

Hillel the Elder came up from Babylonia and, with Shammai, formed the last of the five Pairs; he served as nasi and his school, Beit Hillel, is the one the law follows in almost every dispute. Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai was his student, and through him the whole tannaitic line runs.

The stories are famous and short: the poor man who climbed to the skylight to hear Torah and was found there under the snow; the convert who asked to be taught the whole Torah standing on one foot and was told that what is hateful to you do not do to your fellow, the rest is commentary, go and learn; and his own words — if I am not for myself who will be for me, and if I am only for myself what am I, and if not now, when. He is the pattern of patience the tradition holds up.

Of the fifth pair; the school of Beit Hillel is his. בית הלל (the school) is NOT counted here.
