GEMARA. Rabbi Elazar said: one who carries out a burden above ten handbreadths is liable, for such was the burden of the sons of Kehat. And the burden of the sons of Kehat — whence do we know it? For it is written "by the Tabernacle and by the altar round about" (Numbers 3:26): it likens the altar to the Tabernacle — just as the Tabernacle was ten cubits, so too the altar was ten cubits. And the Tabernacle itself — whence do we know it? For it is written "Ten cubits shall be the length of a board" (Exodus 26:16), and it is written "And he spread the tent over the Tabernacle" (Exodus 40:19); and Rav said: Moses our teacher spread it. From here you learn that the height of the Levites was ten cubits. And it is a received tradition that of every burden that is borne aloft upon poles, a third is above and two thirds below. It is found, then, that it was raised a great deal higher.
