Paragraph 1א׳
רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן יוֹחָאי, אֲזַל לֵיהּ וַעֲרַק לְמַדְבְּרָא דְלוּד, וְאִתְגְּנֵיז בְּחַד מְעַרְתָּא, הוּא וְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בְּרֵיהּ. אִתְרְחֵישׁ לוֹן נִיסָּא, וּנְפַק לְהוֹ חַד חֲרוּבָא, וְחַד מַעֲיָינָא דְמַיָּיא. אָכְלֵי מֵהַהוּא חֲרוּבָא, וְשָׁתָאן מֵאִינוּן מַיִין. הֲוָה אֵלִיָּהוּ זָכוּר לַטוֹב, אָתֵי לוֹן בְּכָל יוֹמָא תְּרֵי זִמְנֵי, וְאוֹלִיף לוֹן. וְלָא יָדַע אֵינַשׁ בְּהוּ.

Paragraph 2ב׳
יוֹמָא חַד הֲווֹ חַכִּימַיָיא בְּבֵי מִדְרְשָׁא שׁוֹאֲלִין, וְאָמְרִין, קְלָלוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹרַת כֹּהֲנִים, אִינוּן כְּנֶגֶד בַּיִת רִאשׁוֹן. קְלָלוֹת שֶׁבְּמִשְׁנֵה תוֹרָה כְּנֶגֶד בַּיִת שֵׁנִי וְגָלוּת אַחֲרוֹן. בַּקְּלָלוֹת שֶׁבְּתוֹרַת כֹּהֲנִים, אִית בְּהוּ הַבְטָחוֹת, וַחֲבִיבוּ דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְיִשְׂרָאֵל, דִּכְתִיב, (ויקרא כ״ו:מ״ד) וְזָכַרְתִּי אֶת בְּרִיתִי יַעֲקוֹב וְגו'. וּכְתִיב וְאַף גַּם זֹאת בִּהְיוֹתָם בְּאֶרֶץ אֹיְבֵיהֶם. קְלָלוֹת שֶׁבְּמִשְׁנֵה תוֹרָה, לֵית בְּהוּ הַבְטָחוֹת, וְלֵית בְּהוּ נֶחָמָה כְּלָל, כְּמָא דִכְתִיב בַּקְּלָלוֹת קַדְמָאִין. וְלָא הֲווֹ יָדְעֵי.
One day the sages were in the study hall asking and said, "The curses in the Book of Leviticus are apropos the First Temple. The curses in the Book of Deuteronomy are apropos the Second Temple and the final exile. The curses in the Book of Leviticus have within them accurance, and the love of the Holy Blessed One for Israel, as written (Lev. 26:44) 'And I will remember My covenant with Jacob' etc., and it is written, 'And even with all this when they are in the land of their enemies...' The curses in the Book of Deuteronomy do not have within them accurance , nor within them any comfort at all, as written in the former curses." And they did not know.

קָם רַבִּי יְהוּדָה בַּר אִלְעָאי וַאֲמַר, חֲבָל עַל גְּרִיעוּתָא דְּבַר יוֹחָאי, וְלֵית מַאן דְּיָדַע מִנֵּיהּ. וְאִלּוּ יָדְעֵי, לֵית רְשׁוּ לְגַלָּאָה לֵיהּ.
Rabbi Yehuda son of Ilai rose and said, "A shame about the lowliness of Bar Yoḥai, for none know it, and if they know, none can reveal it."
