The Zohar · Vayishlach
Zohar, Vayishlach 7
Section 7 of 30 in Vayishlach — 18 segments
Segment 1
“Therefore the children of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh-vein,” etc., “because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh, in the sinew of the thigh-vein” — for it is forbidden even to derive benefit from it, even to give it to a dog. And why is it called gid ha-nasheh? That is to say, a sinew that makes men forget (manshe) the service of their Master; and there the evil prompter lies couched.
Segment 2
When he closed with Jacob he found no place in which he could prevail over Jacob, because all the members of the body supported Jacob, and all of them were strong and there was no weakness in them. What did he do? “He touched the hollow of his thigh, in the sinew of the thigh-vein” — in his own kind, in the evil prompter, which is his kind and his place; and from there the evil prompter comes upon men.
Segment 3
And therefore the Torah said, “The children of Israel do not eat the sinew of the thigh-vein.” As the Companions have said, of the members of a man, which point to what is above: if good, good; and if evil, evil. And therefore member reinforces member. Assuredly the sinew of the thigh-vein reinforces the evil prompter, which is its kind; and the children of Israel do not eat it, since they are not of its side and not of its kind. But the idolatrous nations eat it, for it is of the side and of the kind of their angel, who is Samael, so as to strengthen their heart.
