Segment 1א׳

(ויקרא ג׳:א׳) וְאִם זֶבַח שְׁלָמִים קָרְבָּנוֹ. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר, כְּתִיב (במדבר ז׳:פ״ו) עֲשָׂרָה עֲשָׂרָה הַכַּף בְּשֶׁקֶל הַקֹּדֶשׁ. עֲשָׂרָה עֲשָׂרָה לְמַאי קָא אַתְיָא. אֶלָּא, עֲשָׂרָה לְמַעֲשֶׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית. וַעֲשָׂרָה לְמַתַּן תּוֹרָה. עֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית, וַעֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת בְּמַתַּן תּוֹרָה. בְּמַאי קָא מַיְירֵי. בְּגִין דְּעָלְמָא לָא אִתְבְּרֵי אֶלָּא בְּגִין אוֹרַיְיתָא, וְכָל זִמְנָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מִתְעַסְקֵי בְּאוֹרַיְיתָא, עָלְמָא מִתְקַיְּימָא. וְכָל זִמְנָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל מִתְבַּטְלֵי מֵאוֹרַיְיתָא, מַה כְּתִיב, (ירמיהו ל״ג:כ״ה) אִם לֹא בְרִיתִי יוֹמָם וָלָיְלָה חֻקּוֹת שָׁמַיִם וָאָרֶץ לֹא שָׂמְתִּי.

IF HIS OBLATION BE A SACRIFICE OF PEACE OFFERINGS (Lev. 3, 1). R. Simeon says: it is written, “ten, ten, the spoon, after the shekel of the sanctuary” (Num. 7, 86). What does “ten, ten” come to teach? But ten for the work of creation, and ten for the giving of the Torah: ten sayings in the work of creation, and ten sayings at the giving of the Torah. What is it treating of? Because the world was not created save for the sake of the Torah; and all the time that Israel occupy themselves with the Torah, the world endures. And all the time that Israel are idle from the Torah, what is written? “If My covenant be not with day and night, if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth” (Jer. 33, 25).

תָּא חֲזֵי, עֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת לְמַעֲשֶׂה בְרֵאשִׁית, כְּדִתְנָן בַּעֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת נִבְרָא הָעוֹלָם. עֲשָׂרָה מַאֲמָרוֹת לְמַתַּן תּוֹרָה, אֵלּוּ עֲשֶׂרֶת הַדִּבְּרוֹת. כְּתִיב (שמות כ) אָנֹכִי יְיָ' אֱלֹהֶיךָ. וּכְתִיב בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית (בראשית א׳:ג׳) יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי אוֹר. דָּא מְהֵימְנוּתָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא אוֹר אִקְרֵי, דִּכְתִּיב, (תהילים כ״ז:א׳) יְיָ' אוֹרִי וְיִשְׁעִי מִמִּי אִירָא וְגוֹ'.

Observe: ten sayings for the work of creation, as we have learnt, With ten sayings the world was created. Ten sayings for the giving of the Torah — these are the Ten Commandments. It is written, “I am the Lord your God” (Ex. 20); and it is written in the work of creation, “Let there be light, and there was light” (Gen. 1, 3). This is the faith of the Holy One, blessed be He, which is called light, as it is written, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” etc. (Ps. 27, 1).

כְּתִיב (שמות כ׳:ג׳) לא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנָי. וּכְתִיב בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְּרִאשִׁית, (בראשית א׳:ו׳) יְהִי רָקִיעַ בְּתוֹךְ הַמָּיִם וְגוֹ'. יְהִי רָקִיעַ, אִלֵּין יִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּאִינּוּן חוּלָקָא דְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, דְּאַחְדִּין בְּהַהוּא אַתְרָא דְּאִקְרֵי שָׁמַיִם. וְהַיְינוּ רָזָא, דְּזִמְנָא חֲדָא שָׁאַל רִבִּי יֵיסָא סָבָא לְרִבִּי אֶלְעָאי, אָמַר, הָא שְׁאָר עַמִּין יָהַב לוֹן קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְרַבְרְבִין מְמָנָן שַׁלִּיטִין, יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּאָן אֲתַר יָהַב לוֹן. שָׁלַח לֵיהּ, וַיִּתֵּן אֹתָם אֱלֹהִים בִּרְקִיעַ הַשָּׁמָיִם, וְשַׁפִּיר שָׁלַח לֵיהּ.

It is written, “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Ex. 20, 3); and it is written in the work of creation, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters,” etc. (Gen. 1, 6). “Let there be a firmament”: these are Israel, who are the portion of the Holy One, blessed be He, and who take hold of that place which is called heaven. And this is the mystery: that once R. Jesse the Elder asked R. Ilai, saying, the Holy One, blessed be He, has given the other nations to great appointed rulers; in what place has He given Israel? He sent to him, “And God set them in the firmament of the heaven” — and he sent well.

בְּתוֹךָ הַמָּיִם, בֵּין מִלּוּלֵי אוֹרַיְיתָא. ויהִי מַבְדִּיל בֵּין (שמות קצ"ט) מַיִם לָמָּיִם, בֵּין קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, דְּאִקְרֵי בְּאֵר מַיִם חַיִּים. וּבֵין עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה, דְּאִקְרֵי (ירמיהו ב׳:י״ג) בּוֹרוֹת נִשְׁבָּרִים וְגוֹ' דְּאִינוּן מַיִם הַמָּרִים, מַיִם עֲכוּרִין, מְכוּנָסִים, סְרוּחִים וּמְטוּנָפִים. וְעַל דָּא יִשְׂרָאֵל קַדִּישִׁין מַבְדִילִין בֵּין מַיִם לָמָיִם.

“In the midst of the waters”: among the words of the Torah. “And let it divide (Shemot, folio 199) the waters from the waters”: between the Holy One, blessed be He, who is called a well of living waters, and idolatry, which is called “broken cisterns” (Jer. 2, 13), etc., which are bitter waters, turbid waters, gathered, foul and defiled. And therefore holy Israel divide between waters and waters.

כְּתִיב (שמות כ׳:ז׳) לא תִשָּׂא אֶת שֵׁם יְיָ' אֱלֹהֶיךָ לַשָּׁוְא, וּכְתִיב בְּמַעֲשֵׂה בְּרֵאשִׁית, (בראשית א׳:ט׳) יִקָּווּ הַמַּיִם מִתַּחַת הַשָּׁמַיִם אֶל מָקוֹם אֶחָד. תָּא חֲזֵי, כָּל מַאן דְּאוֹמֵי בִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא לְשַׁקְרָא, כְּאִילּוּ פָּרִישׁ אִימָּא מֵאַתְרָה לְעֵילָּא. וְכִתְרִין קַדִּישִׁין לָא מִתְיַישְׁבֵי בְּדוּכְתַּיְיהוּ, כְּמָה דְּאַתְּ אָמֵר, (משלי ט״ז:כ״ח) וְנִרְגָּן מַפְרִיד אַלּוּף. וְאֵין אַלּוּף אֶלָּא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא. וּכְתִיב יִקָּווּ הַמַּיִם מִתַּחַת הַשָּׁמַיִם אֶל מָקוֹם אֶחָד, לָא תְּשַׁוֵי פִּרוּדָא, בְּגִין אוֹמָאָה דְּשִׁקְרָא. אֶל מָקוֹם אֶחָד, כַּדְקָא חֲזֵי בַּאֲתַר דִּקְשׁוֹט, וְלָא בַּאֲתַר אָחֳרָא לְשַׁקְרָא. וּמַאי שִׁקְרָא. הוּא דְּאַזְלִין מַיָּא לַאֲתַר אָחֳרָא, דְּלָאו אִיהוּ דִּילֵיהּ.

It is written, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Ex. 20, 7); and it is written in the work of creation, “Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together to one place” (Gen. 1, 9). Observe: whoever swears falsely by the Holy Name, it is as though he divided the Mother from her place above; and the holy crowns are not settled in their places, as you say, “and a whisperer separates familiar friends” (Prov. 16, 28); and there is no familiar friend save the Holy One, blessed be He. And it is written, “Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together to one place”: do not make division, by reason of a false oath. “To one place”: as is fitting, in the place of truth, and not in another place, for falsehood. And what is falsehood? It is that the waters go to another place that is not their own.
