Tosefta (the Zohar’s own supplement). Sons of the world, lovers of the supernal One, authority of the chosen: draw near and hear. Whoever among you is wise, a master of eyes in understanding, let him come and know. When the White Head took three letters and engraved them with an engraving of engravings — one an Aleph, one a Yod, and one a Nun — there was engraved Ayin (Nought). The Aleph is the supernal head of all, hidden of all hidden. The Yod was the ascent of will; it was perfected from the head above and came down below; it went forth and brought forth thirty-two paths, until they were engraved among precious stones that flame. And they were bound in the letter Nun, which is male and female, two lovers. A strong bond: in them they were perfected, and the Holy Name was bound in them; from them sustenance is found for all, and the worlds were perfected.

Segment 2

And therefore a straight Nun was engraved, the sum of two; the bent Nun is one female. The Yod, which is the will that brought forth paths, struck between the letters and made the firmament of Jacob between two winds, and cast words among the limbs, until it came down to this Nun which is bent; and they joined her together, north and south, and afterwards they were bound as one. This bent Nun is called Beer-sheba, and it was filled from Jacob, to water all the flocks of sheep. And therefore, AND JACOB WENT OUT FROM BEER-SHEBA AND WENT TOWARD HARAN. Further: from Beer-sheba above, for from her he went out; and afterwards he went to water Haran, which is the well below — the fierce anger (haron af) of the Lord, the sword of the Lord, judgement, the court of judgement, Elohim. And therefore, “O God, the nations have come into Your inheritance” (Ps. 79, 1). (End of Tosefta)

Segment 3

Whilst R. Isaac was one day sitting at the entrance of the cave of Apikutha, a man passed by with his two sons. Said one of them to the other: ‘The sun is most powerful when it is in the South, and were it not for the wind which tempers the heat, the world could not exist.’
