Segment 1א׳

(בראשית ל״ב:ב׳) וְיַעֲקֹב הָלַךְ לְדַרְכּוֹ וַיִּפְגְּעוּ בוֹ מַלְאֲכֵי אֱלהִים. רִבִּי אַבָּא פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (בראשית ה׳:ב׳) זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בְּרָאָם וְגו', כַּמָּה אִית לָן לְאִסְתַּכָּלָא בְּמִלֵּי דְאוֹרַיְיתָא. וַוי לוֹן לְאִינוּן אֲטִימֵי לִבָּא וּסְתִימִין עַיְינִין, הָא אוֹרַיְיתָא קָארֵי קַמַּיְיהוּ, (משלי ט׳:ה׳-ו׳) לְכוּ לַחֲמוּ בְלַחְמִי וּשְׁתוּ בְּיַיִן מָסָכְתִּי. (שם) מִי פֶּתִי יָסוּר הֵנָּה חֲסַר לֵב אָמְרָה לוֹ, וְלֵית מַאן דְּיַשְׁגַּח.

AND JACOB WENT ON HIS WAY, AND THE ANGELS OF GOD MET HIM. R. Abba discoursed on the verse: Male and female created he them, etc. (Gen. 5, 2). ‘How incumbent it is upon us’, he said, ‘to study intently the words of the Torah! Woe to those whose heart is obdurate and whose eyes are blinded! Behold, the Torah is calling unto them, saying: “Whoso is thoughtless, let him turn in hither; as for him that lacketh understanding, she saith to him: Come, eat, of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled” (Prov. 9, 4-5). But there is no one to pay attention to her.

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, הַאי קְרָא, אִית בֵּיהּ רָזִין עִלָאִין, אִיהוּ לְגוֹ, וְאִיהוּ לְבַר. זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה בְּרָאָם, אִשְׁתְּמַע לְהַאי גַוְונָא, וְאִשְׁתְּמַע לְהַאי גַוְונָא. וְאִשְׁתְּמַע דְּשִׁמְשָׁא וְסִיהֲרָא בְּחִבּוּרָא חָדָא אִינוּן, דִּכְתִיב בְּרָאָם. כְּמָה דְאַתְּ אָמֵר, (חבקוק ג׳:י״א) שֶׁמֶשׁ יָרֵחַ עָמַד זְבוּלָה. וְאִשְׁתְּמַע, דְּאָדָם וְחַוָּה כְּחֲדָא אִתְבְּרִיאוּ, בְּזִוּוּגָא חַד. וְכֵיוָן דְּאִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ בְּזִוּוּגָא חַד, מִיָּד וַיְבָרֶךְ אֹתָם. דְּלֵית בִּרְכָתָא שַׁרְיָא, אֶלָּא בְּאֲתַר דְּאִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ דְּכַר וְנוּקְבָא.

Observe that this verse contains sublime mysteries, it has an inner and an outer meaning. Thus, one meaning is that the sun and moon are closely united, as is implied in the passage: “The sun and the moon stand still in her habitation” (Hab. 3, 11); and another is that Adam and Eve were created as a united pair; and since they were coupled together, God blessed them. For blessing does not reside save in a spot where there are male and female.

תָּא חֲזֵי, כַּד נָפַק יַעֲקֹב לְמֵיהַךְ לְחָרָן, בִּלְחוֹדוֹי הֲוָה, דְּלָא אִינְסִיב. מַה כְּתִיב, (בראשית כ״ח:י״א) וַיִּפְגַּע בַּמָּקוֹם וְגו', וְלָא אָתִיבוּ לֵיהּ אֶלָּא בְּחֶלְמָא, הַשְׁתָּא דְאִנְסִיב וְהֲוָה אָתֵי בְּכֻלְּהוּ שִׁבְטִין. כִּבְיָכוֹל מַשִּׁרְיָין עִלָּאִין, פָּגְעִין בֵּיהּ, וְאִתְחַנְּנוּ לֵיהּ. דִּכְתִיב וַיִּפְגְּעוּ בוֹ, אִינוּן אַהֲדָרוּ לְמִפְגַּע בֵּיהּ. בְּקַדְמִיתָא אִיהוּ וַיִּפְגַּע בַּמָּקוֹם, הַשְׁתָּא אִינוּן וַיִּפְגְּעוּ בוֹ.

Observe that when Jacob set out on his journey to Haran he was all by himself, not yet having married. What does Scripture say of that occasion? “And he lighted upon (vayifga’=entreated) the place, etc.” (Gen. 28, 11), and he was only promised deliverance in a dream. But now that he was married and was coming with all the tribes, heavenly legions entreated and supplicated him, as it were, for we read: “And the angels of God met (vayifge’u=entreated) him.” Whereas before it was he who entreated the “place”, now it was they who entreated him,
