Sitrei Torah (the mysteries of the Torah). “The sun rises and the sun comes in” (Eccl. 1, 5). What did King Solomon see, that the opening of his book of wisdom is from here? R. Eleazar said: King Solomon founded this book upon seven “vanities” (habalim, lit. breaths), and the world stands upon them. And they are the pillars and the supports, the sustaining of the world. And therefore they are called habalim: as the body does not subsist without breath, so too the world does not subsist except upon the habalim of which King Solomon spoke. And they are seven, as it is written, “Vanity of vanities, said Koheleth; vanity of vanities, all is vanity” (Eccl. 1, 2) — here are seven.
Segment 2
And should you say: if it is so, that they are goodly pearls upon which the world stands, yet in another place evil habalim are written of, and they are the undoing of the world, such as “this is vanity and an evil disease” (Eccl. 6, 2), “this is vanity and a striving after wind” (Eccl. 4, 4). Assuredly: although these seven habalim, which are holy, are the sustaining of the world, there are set over against these seven habalim others from which all the judgements of the world issue, and from them they spread. And they are called other habalim, to chastise the sons of men and to set them right, that they walk in the straight path; and they are called the vanity in which an evil disease lodges, the vanity that is a striving after wind. And they too are a sustaining, for through them the sons of men walk in the straight path and fear the Holy One, blessed be He. And therefore many are the habalim that spread out from these seven.
Segment 3
And the opening of what he said is the mystery of the sun, which is the breath that sustains the world; and it is the mystery by which a man is brought within the supernal faith of the Holy One, blessed be He. And therefore, all that is below this grade is not the mystery of faith; and therefore it is written, “and there is no profit under the sun” (Eccl. 2, 11), “in all that is done under the sun” (Eccl. 9, 3) — for below this it is not fitting to cleave.
