זוהר, וירא י״זZohar, Vayera 17

Segment 1א׳

מִדְרָשׁ הַנֶּעֱלָם רַבִּי פָּתַח בְּהַאי קְרָא (שופטים ג׳:א׳) וְאֵלֶּה הַגּוֹיִם אֲשֶׁר הִנִּיחַ יְיָ לְנַסּוֹת בָּם אֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל. אָמַר רַבִּי חָזֵי הֲוִית בְּהַהוּא עָלְמָא (ולית עלמא) קָאִים (ד"א ולית מעלה) אֶלָּא בְּאִנּוּן דְּשַׁלִּיטִין עַל רְעוּתָא דְּלִבְּהוֹן שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (תהילים פ״א:ו׳) עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ וְגו'. אָמַר רַב יְהוּדָה לָמָּה זָכָה יוֹסֵף לְאוֹתָהּ הַמַּעֲלָה וְהַמַּלְכוּת, בִּשְׁבִיל שֶׁכָּבַשׁ יִצְּרוֹ. דְּתָנִינָן כָּל הַכּוֹבֵשׁ אֶת יִצְּרוֹ מַלְכוּתָא דִּשְׁמַיָא אָחִיל עֲלֵיהּ.

Midrash Hane'elam. Rabbi discoursed on this verse: And these are the nations which the Lord left, to test Israel by them (Jud. 3, 1). Said Rabbi: I have seen that that world stands only upon those who rule over the desire of their heart, as it says, “He appointed it in Joseph for a testimony,” etc. (Ps. 81, 6). Said Rab Judah: Why did Joseph merit that eminence and that kingship? Because he subdued his inclination. For we have learnt: whoever subdues his inclination, the kingdom of heaven is spread over him.

Segment 2ב׳

דְּאָמַר רַב אַחָא לֹא בָּרָא הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לַיֵּצֶּר הָרָע אֶלָּא לְנַסּוֹת בּוֹ בְּנֵי אָדָם. וּמִי בָּעֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְנַסּוּתָא בִּבְנֵי נָשָׁא. אִין. דְּאָמַר רַב אַחָא מְנָא לָן מִדִּכְתִיב, (דברים י״ג:ד׳) כִּי יָקוּם בְּקִרְבְּךָ נָבִיא וגו' וּבָא הָאוֹת וְהַמּוֹפֵת וגו' כִּי מְנַסֶה יְיָ אֱלהֵיכֶם וגו'. וְלָמָה בָּעֵי נַסוּתָא דְּהָא כָּל עוֹבָדוֹי דְּבַר נָשׁ אִתְגְּלִי קַמֵּיהּ, אֶלָּא שֶׁלא לָתֵת פִּתְחוֹן פֶּה לִבְנֵי אָדָם. רְאֵה מַה כְּתִיב וְלוֹט יוֹשֵׁב בְּשַׁעַר סְדוֹם, דְּהֲוָה יָתִיב לְנַסּוּתָא לִבְרִיָּיתָא.

For Rab Aha said: The Holy One, blessed be He, created the evil tempter only in order to test the sons of men by it. And does the Holy One, blessed be He, require to test the sons of men? He does. For Rab Aha said: How do we know it? From what is written, “If there arise in the midst of you a prophet,” etc., “and the sign or the wonder come to pass,” etc., “for the Lord your God is testing you,” etc. (Deut. 13, 4). And why does He require a test, seeing that all a man’s deeds are revealed before Him? Only so as not to give the sons of men an opening for their mouth. See what is written, “And Lot sat in the gate of Sodom” — for he sat there to be a test to created beings.

Segment 3ג׳

אָמַר רַבִּי יִצְּחָק מַאי דִּכְתִיב (ישעיהו נ״ז:כ׳) וְהָרְשָׁעִים כַּיָּם נִגְרָשׁ וְגו'. אֲפִלּוּ בִּשְׁעַת דִּינוֹ שֶׁל רָשָׁע הוּא מֵעִיז פָּנָיו ואֲזַי הוּא בְּרִשְׁעָתוֹ קַיָּים, רְאֵה מַה כְּתִיב טֶרֶם יִשְׁכָּבוּ וגו'. אָמַר רַבִּי יִצְּחָק כְּשֵׁם שֶׁבָּרָא קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא גַּן עֵדֶן בָּאָרֶץ כָּךְ בָּרָא גֵּיהִנֹּם בָּאָרֶץ. וּכְשֵׁם שֶׁבָּרָא גַּן עֵדֶן לְמַעְלָה כָּךְ בָּרָא גֵּיהִנֹּם לְמַעְלָה.

R. Isaac said: What is the meaning of what is written, “But the wicked are like the troubled sea,” etc. (Is. 57, 20)? Even in the hour of the wicked man’s judgement he brazens his face, and then he stands fast in his wickedness. See what is written, “Before they lay down,” etc. (Gen. 19, 4). R. Isaac said: Just as the Holy One, blessed be He, created a Garden of Eden on the earth, so He created a Gehinnom on the earth; and just as He created a Garden of Eden above, so He created a Gehinnom above.
