Segment 1א׳

פָּתַח רִבִּי אַבָּא וְאָמַר, (מלכים א ז׳:כ״ג) וַיַּעַשׂ אֶת הַיָּם מוּצָק וְגו'. וּכְתִיב עוֹמֵד עַל שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר בָּקָר שְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים צָפוֹנָה וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים יָמָּה וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים נֶגְבָּה וְגו' (רמ"ו ע"א) וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם מִלְּמַעְלָה וְגו'. וּכְתִיב וְאֶת הַבָּקָר שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר תַּחַת הַיָּם (וגו'). עוֹמֵד עַל שְׁנֵי עָשָׂר בָּקָר, הָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי, דְּדָא יָם מִתַּקְנָא בְּי"ב בִּתְרֵין עָלְמִין, בִּתְרֵיסַר לְעֵילָא רְתִיכִין מְמַנָּן. לְעֵילָא בִּתְרֵיסַר, לְתַתָּא תְּרֵיסַר שִׁבְטִין. כֵּיוָן דְּחָמָא יַעֲקֹב תִּקּוּנָא עִלָּאָה, וְחָמָא שְׁכִינְתָּא קָאִים לְקֳבְלֵיהּ, בָּעָא לְאַשְׁלָמָא תִּקּוּנָהָא, קָרָא לִבְנוֹהִי תְּרֵיסַר, וְאָמַר לוֹן הֵאָסְפוּ. אַתְקִינוּ גַרְמַיְיכוּ לְאַשְׁלָמָא מְהֵימְנוּתָא.

R. Abba discoursed on the verse: And he made the molten sea, etc. (I Kings 7, 23). And it is written: “It stood upon twelve oxen, three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, etc.” (Ibid. 25); “and the sea was set upon them above, etc.” And it is written: “and the twelve oxen under the sea” (Ibid. 44). “It stood upon twelve oxen”: so it assuredly is, for this sea is set in order by twelve, in two worlds — by twelve above, appointed chariots; above by twelve, below by twelve tribes. When Jacob beheld the supernal adornment, and saw the Shekinah standing before him, he sought to complete her adornment. He called his twelve sons and said to them: gather yourselves together. Prepare yourselves to complete the faith.

Segment 2ב׳

תָּא חֲזֵי, תְּרֵיסַר שִׁבְטִין, בְּד' דִּגְלִין, בְּד' סִטְרִין, שְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים צָפוֹנָה וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים יָמָה וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים נֶגְבָּה וּשְׁלשָׁה פּוֹנִים מִזְרָחָה וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם. וְהָכִי הוּא וַדַּאי, תְּלַת שִׁבְטִין לְכָל סְטַר לְד' רוּחֵי עַלְמָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לִדְרוֹעָא דִּימִינָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לִדְרוֹעָא דִשְׂמָאלָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין, לְיַרְכָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לְיַרְכָא שְׂמָאלָא, וְגוּפָא דִשְׁכִינְתָּא עֲלַיְיהוּ. הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם.

Observe: the twelve tribes, in four standards, on four sides — “three looking toward the north, and three looking toward the west, and three looking toward the south, and three looking toward the east, and the sea was set upon them.” And so it assuredly is: three tribes to each side, for the four quarters of the world; three tribes for the right arm, and three tribes for the left arm, and three tribes for the right thigh, and three tribes for the left thigh, and the body of the Shekinah upon them. So it is written: “and the sea was set upon them.”

Segment 3ג׳

מַאי טַעְמָא תְּלַת שִׁבְטִין לִדְרוֹעָא, וּתְלַת שִׁבְטִין לְיַרְכָא, וְכֵן לְכֹלָּא. אֶלָּא רָזָא דְמִלָּה, תְּלַת קִשְׁרִין אִינוּן בִּדְרוֹעָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת בִּשְׂמָאלָא, וּתְלַת בְּיַרְכָא יְמִינָא, וּתְלַת קִשְׁרִין בְּיַרְכָא שְׂמָאלָא, אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ תְּרֵיסַר קִשְׁרִין לְאַרְבַּע סִטְרִין, וְגוּפָא עֲלַיְיהוּ. אִשְׁתַּכָּחוּ תְּרֵיסַר עִם גּוּפָא כְּגַוְונָא דִלְעֵילָא. מְנָא לָן, דִּכְתִיב, כָּל אֵלֶּה שִׁבְטֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל שְׁנֵים עָשָׂר. וְזֹאת, בְּגִין דְּבָהּ אִשְׁתְּלִים חוּשְׁבְּנָא, כְּמָה דְאִתְּמָר וְהַיָּם עֲלֵיהֶם מִלְּמָעְלָה.

What is the reason for three tribes to an arm, and three tribes to a thigh, and so for all? The mystery of the matter is this: there are three joints in the right arm, and three in the left, and three in the right thigh, and three joints in the left thigh. Thus there are found twelve joints to the four sides, and the body upon them. Thus there are found twelve with the body, after the pattern above. How do we know it? Because it is written: “All these are the twelve tribes of Israel” (Gen. 49, 28). AND THIS — because with her the number is completed, as has been said: “and the sea was set upon them above.”
