Segment 1א׳

כְּגַוְונָא דָא כְּתִיב, (בראשית ג׳:כ״ד) וְאֶת לַהַט הַחֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת, מַלְאָכִין אִית שְׁלוּחַן בְּעַלְמָא, דְּמִתְהַפְּכִין לְכַמָּה גְוָונִין, לְזִמְנִין נוּקְבֵי, לְזִמְנִין דְּכוּרֵי, לְזִמְנִין דִּינָא, לְזִמְנִין רַחֲמֵי, וְכֹלָּא בְּחַד גַּוְונָא. כְּגַוְונָא דָּא הַאי מַלְאָךְ, בִּגְוָונִין סַגִּיאִין אִיהוּ, וְכָל גְּוָונִין דְּעַלְמָא, כֻּלְּהוּ אִיתָנְהוּ בְּהַאי אֲתַר. וְרָזָא דָא, (יחזקאל א׳:כ״ח) כְּמַרְאֵה הַקֶּשֶׁת אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה בֶעָנָן בְּיוֹם הַגֶּשֶׁם כֵּן מַרְאֵה הַנֹּגַּהּ סָבִיב הוּא מַרְאֵה דְּמוּת כְּבוֹד ה'. וּכְמָה דְּאִית בֵּיהּ כָּל אִינוּן גְּוָונִין, הָכִי נָמֵי אַנְהִיג לְכָל עָלְמָא:

Similarly, in the words, “the flame of the sword which turned every way” (Gen 3, 24), there is a reference to the angels who are God’s messengers, and who turn themselves into different shapes, being sometimes female and sometimes male, sometimes messengers of judgement and sometimes of mercy. In the same way, this angel can take all colours like the rainbow, and treats the world correspondingly.

Segment 2ב׳

תוספתא רְחִימֵי עִלָּאֵי, מָארֵי דְסֻכְלְתָּנוּ אִסְתַּכָּלוּ, הוּרְמָנִי יְדִיעָן בְּקוּלְפֵּי דְּסִיכְתָּא, קְרִיבוּ לְמִנְדַע, מַאן מִנְּכוֹן מָארֵי דְעַיְינִין בְּסֻכְלְתָּנוּ, וְיָדַע בְּשַׁעְתָּא דְּסָלִיק בִּרְעוּתָּא דְרָזָא דְרָזִין, לְאֲפָּקָא תְּלַתּ גְּוָונִין כְּחֲדָא כְּלִילָן, ואִינוּן, חִוַּור וְסוּמָק ויָרוֹק, תְּלַתּ גּווָֹנִין כְּחֲדָא אִשְׁתְּלִיבָאן דָּא עִם דָּא, מִזְדַּווגָן (ס"א מזדלגן) דָּא עִם דָּא, מַגְרוֹפַּיָא תַּתָּאָה אִצְטַבַּע, ונָפְּקָא מִגּוֹ גּווָֹנִין אִלֵּין.

Tosefta (one of the Zohar’s own oracular units). Supernal beloved ones, masters of understanding, gaze! Mandates are made known by the strokes of the peg. Draw near to know: who among you is a master of eyes in understanding, and knows the hour when it arose in the will of the secret of secrets to bring forth three colours comprised as one? And they are white, red and green — three colours interlaced as one, this with that, coupled this with that; the lower shovel was dyed, and it comes forth from within these colours.

Segment 3ג׳

וְכָל גּווָֹנִין אִלֵּין, אִתְּחֲזוּן בְּהַאי. חֵיזוּ אִיהוּ לְאִסְתַּכָּלָא, כְּעֵינָא דִּבְדוֹלְחָא אִתְּחֲזֵי בְּשַׁעְתָּא. כְּגַוְונָא דְּבָטַשׁ בְּגַוָּוהּ, הָכִי אִתְּחֲזִיִ לְבַר. אִלֵּין תְּלַתּ גּווָֹנִין סַחֲרָן לְהַאי, וְגווָֹנָא אָזְלָא סָלְקָא וְנָחֲתָּא קִסְטוֹרִין דְּקִטְרָא קְבִיעֵי בְּגוָֹון (ס"א בגווה).

And all these colours are seen in this one. It is an appearance to gaze upon, like the appearance of bdellium seen for a moment. According as it strikes within her, so it appears without. These three colours encircle this one, and a colour goes, ascending and descending; wreaths of smoke are fixed in the colour.
