Segment 1א׳

תוספתא (שיר השירים א׳:י״ד) אֶשְׁכּוֹל הַכּוֹפֶר דּוֹדִי לִי. אֶשְׁכּוֹל: דָּא אִימָּא עִלָּאָה. מַה אֶשְׁכּוֹל מִתְקַשֵּׁט בְּכַמָּה עָלִין בְּכַמָּה זְמוֹרוֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵל דְּאַכְלִין לֵיהּ, הָכִי שְׁכִינְתָּא עִלָּאָה, מִתְקַשֶּׁטֶת בְּכַמָּה קִשּׁוּטִין דִּשְׁמֹנָה כֵּלִים, מִכַּמָּה קָרְבָּנִין, מִכַּמָּה מִינֵי תַּכְשִׁיטִין דְּכַפְּרָה לִבְנָהָא, וְאִיהִי קָמַת בְּהוֹן קָמֵי מַלְכָּא, וּמִיַּד (בראשית ט׳:ט״ז) וּרְאִיתִיהָ לִזְכּוֹר בְּרִית עוֹלָם. וִיהִיבַת (ס"א לון שאלתין דלהון) לָן שְׁאֶילְתִּין דִּילָהּ, בְּאִלֵּין בִּרְכָּאן דְּתָקִינוּ רַבָּנָן בִּצְלוֹתָא, לְמִשְׁאַל קַמֵי מַלְכָּא.

(Shir Hashirim 1:14) "A cluster of henna is my Beloved." A cluster refers to the Supernal Imma (Mother), namely NAMELY BINAH. As a cluster is decorated with so many leaves and so many branches to Israel who eat it, so the Supernal Shechinah, WHICH IS BINAH, is decorated. SHE ELEVATES MAYIN NUKVIN (FEMALE WATERS) TO CHOCHMAH, with many jewels of eight vessels, NAMELY THE FOUR LETTERS OF YOD HEH VAV HEH AND THE FOUR LETTERS OF ADONAI, WHICH ARE MALE AND FEMALE, many offerings THAT ISRAEL OFFER, and many kinds of ornaments of atonement for Her children. She stands in them before the King, WHICH IS CHOCHMAH, and immediately, "And I will look on it, to remember the everlasting covenant" (Bereishit 9:16), MEANING THAT HE UNITES WITH HER. AND BINAH gives us from her petitions SHE ASKED FROM CHOCHMAH FOR OUR SAKES, THROUGH those blessings that the sages composed to request before the King in the prayer service.

Segment 2ב׳

בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא, כָּל דִּינִין דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא תַּתָּאָה, דְּאִיהִי הוה"י אֲדֹנָ"י, מִתְהַפְּכָן לְרַחֲמֵי, כְּגַוְונָא דָּא ידו"ד, לְקַיֵּים (ישעיהו א׳:י״ח) אִם יִהְיוּ חֲטָאֵיכֶם כַּשָּׁנִים כַּשֶּׁלֶג יַלְבִּינוּ, ידו"ד. אִם יַאְדִּימוּ כַתּוֹלָע. דוד"י. כַּצֶּמֶר יִהְיוּ, ידו"ד. כָּל דִּינִין (נ"א כל דינין דדא') מִתְלַבְּנִין מִשְׁכִינְתָּא עִלָּאָה.

At that time all the judgements of the lower Shekinah, who is He-Vav-He-Yod, Adonai, are turned to mercy, after this manner: Yod-He-Vav-He — to fulfil, “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow” — Yod-He-Vav-He; “though they be red like crimson” — He-Vav-He-Yod; “they shall be as wool” — Yod-He-Vav-He (Isa. 1, 18). All judgements are whitened from the supernal Shekinah.

וְאִיהִי שְׁכִינְתָּא דוד"י, (בראשית ג׳:כ״ד) לַהַט הַחֶרֶב הַמִּתְהַפֶּכֶת לִשְׁמוֹר אֶת דֶּרֶךְ עֵץ הַחַיִּים. וְאוּקְמוּהָ רַבָּנָן, דִּמְהַפְּכָא זִמְנִין רַחֲמֵי, זִמְנִין דִּינָא פְּעָמִים אֲנָשִׁים, פְּעָמִים נָשִׁים. זִמְנִין דִּינָא, כְּגַוְונָא דָּא דוד"י. זִמְנִין רַחֲמֵי, כְּגַוְונָא דָּא ידו"ד. דְּהָא אִיהוּ מִסִּטְרָא דְּאִילָנָא דְּחַיֵּי, כָּל דִּינִין מִתְהַפְּכִין לְרַחֲמֵי. וּמִסִּטְרָא דְּעֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע, כָּל רַחֲמֵי מִתְהַפְּכָן לְדִינָא, לְמֵידָן בְּהוּ לְאִינוּן דְּעַבְרֵי עַל פִּתְגָּמֵי אוֹרַיְיתָא.

And she is the Shekinah — He-Vav-He-Yod — “the flaming sword which turns every way, to keep the way to the tree of life” (Gen. 3, 24). And our teachers have explained that she turns at times to mercy, at times to judgement — at times men, at times women. At times judgement, after this manner: He-Vav-He-Yod; at times mercy, after this manner: Yod-He-Vav-He. For from the side of the tree of life all judgements are turned to mercy, and from the side of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil all mercies are turned to judgement, to judge by them those who transgress the words of the Torah.
