Ra'aya Meheimna. This precept is to burn holy things in fire. And after it, “But the remainder of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burnt with fire.” Tannaim and Amoraim: in the mysteries of the Torah there is holy, and there are holy things, and there is most holy. What pleasure has the Holy One, blessed be He, in holy things that are burned? If you say, because of Isaac — that at the hour when Israel are in distress the ashes of Isaac rise before Him, so that if they are liable to burning they are delivered because of him — this is homiletic exposition. And if you should say, because of (the righteous) the sons of Aaron, who were a burning of holy things, of whom it is written, “And there came forth fire from before the Lord, and consumed them, and they died”, and their death is an atonement for Israel like the burning of holy things — this too comes for homiletic exposition.
Segment 2
But there are three fires in the lamp: a white fire, a black fire and a blue fire. Corresponding to Torah, Prophets and Writings. Corresponding to priest, Levite and Israelite. And the blue is the Shekinah, near to us; and she holds to those wicks, to the wings of the commandment, of which it is stated, “and they shall make for themselves fringes.” And this blue, which is the Shekinah, is judgement, which eats offerings and burnt offerings.
Segment 3
If she finds people who are dry wood, in the manner of those wicks that are dry, without oil — which is the Torah, mercy — she is to them (that they may be judged) a burning, and she burns them. And because the ignorant are beasts, as they have explained, they are a detestable thing. The blue, which is Adonai, burns them, because they draw near to her with a creeping thing, which is the evil inclination, a stranger. This is as it is written, “and the stranger that draws near shall be put to death” (Num. 3, 10).
