Segment 1א׳

אֲתָר אִית בְּיִשּׁוּבָא, דְּלָא שַׁלְטָא בֵּיהּ הַהוּא מְחַבְּלָא, וְלָא אִתְיְיהִיב לֵיהּ רְשׁוּ לְאַעֲלָא תַּמָּן, וְכָל אִינּוּן דְּדַיְירֵי תַּמָּן, לָא מֵתִין, עַד דְּנָפְקִין לְבַר מִקַּרְתָּא. וְלֵית לָךְ בַּר נָשׁ מִכָּל דְּדַיְירִין תַּמָּן, דְּלָא מֵתִין, וְכֻלְּהוּ מֵתִין כִּשְׁאַר בְּנֵי נָשָׁא, אֲבָל לָאו בְּמָתָא. מַאי טַעְמָא. בְּגִין דְּלָא יַכְלִין לְמֵיתַב תָּדִיר בְּמָתָא, אֶלָּא אִלֵּין נָפְקִין, וְאִלֵּין עָאלִין, וְעַל דָּא כֻּלְּהוּ מֵתִין.

There is a place in the world where that “Destroyer” has no power at all, where he is not permitted to enter, and those who live there do not die until they have left the town. And why has the Angel of Destruction no power there?

Segment 2ב׳

מַאי טַעְמָא לָא שַׁלְטָא תַּמָּן הַהוּא מַלְאָךְ מְחַבְּלָא. אִי תֵּימָא דְּלָא קַיְּימָא בִּרְשׁוּתֵיהּ, הָא אַרְעָא קַדִּישָׁא דְּלָא קַיְּימָא בִּרְשׁוּ אַחֲרָא, וּמֵתִין, בְּהַהוּא אֲתָר אֲמַאי לָא מֵתִין. אִי תֵּימָא בְּגִין קְדוּשָּׁה, לֵית אֲתָר בִּקְדוּשָׁה בְּכָל יִשׁוּבָא כְּגַוְונָא דְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל. וְאִי תֵּימָא, בְּגִין הַהוּא גַּבְרָא דְּבָנֵי לָהּ. כַּמָה בְּנֵי נָשָׁא הֲווֹ דִּזְכוּתֵיהוֹן יַתִּיר מִדִילֵיהּ. אָמַר רַבִּי יִצְחָק, אֲנָא לָא שְׁמַעְנָא וְלָא אֵימָא.

It cannot be because it is not his domain, since even in the Holy Land, which is subject to no alien sway, people die. Nor can it be because it is a holy place, because there is no place so holy as the Holy Land. Nor can it be that it is on account of the merits of its builder, for there have been many men of greater merit.’ Said R. Isaac: ‘I have not heard any explanation of this, so I shall say nothing.’

Segment 3ג׳

אָתוּ שָׁאִילּוּ לֵיהּ לְרַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן, אָמַר לוֹן, וַדַּאי הַהוּא אֲתָר לָא שַׁלְטָא עָלֵיהּ מַלְאָךְ הַמָּוֶת, וְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לָא בָּעֵי דִּבְהַהוּא אֲתָר יְמוּת בַּר נָשׁ לְעָלְמִין, וְאִי תֵּימָא, דְּקֹדֶם לָכֵן בְּהַהוּא דּוּכְתָּא, עַד לָא אִתְבְּנֵי, מִיתוּ בֵּיהּ בְּנֵי נָשָׁא, לָאו הָכִי. אֶלָּא מִיּוֹמָא דְּאִתְבְּרֵי עָלְמָא, אִתְתָּקַּן הַהוּא אֲתָר, לְקִיּוּמָא, וְרָזָא דְּרָזִין הָכָא, לְאִינּוּן דְּמִסְתַּכְּלֵי בְּרָזָא דְּחָכְמְתָא.

So they repaired to R. Simeon and asked him concerning this matter. Said he: ‘It is indeed true that the Angel of Death has no power over that place, and the Holy One does not wish that anyone should ever die there. Nor should you think that before the town was built people in that place died. Not so. For, from the very beginning of the world God appointed this place to be thus, and to those who would penetrate into the mystery of wisdom there is in this a mystery of mysteries.
