Segment 1

AND IF A MAN’S HAIR BE FALLEN OFF HIS HEAD, etc. (Lev. 13, 40). R. Hiya discoursed on the verse: “And I saw that there is a profit to wisdom more than to folly,” etc. (Eccl. 2, 13). In many places I have looked into the words of king Solomon, and I have observed his great wisdom, and how he sealed his words within, within the holy palace. This verse calls for examination. Why does he say “And I saw”? Do the rest of the world’s people not know and not see this? Even one who has never known wisdom in his life and has never given heed to it knows this, that there is a profit to wisdom more than to folly, as the profit of light more than of darkness. Yet he praised himself and said, “I saw.”

Segment 2

Rather, thus it has been taught: who was wise as Solomon, who was called by seven grades of wisdom after the pattern of what is above? Six days above, and a seventh, supernal, above them; six days below, and a seventh above them; six steps to the throne, and he upon the throne, as it is written: “Then Solomon sat on the throne of the Lord as king” (I Chron. 29, 23). Seven crowns of the days above, and correspondingly seven names for Solomon, so that the holy wisdom might be seen in him. And therefore he was called by seven names: Solomon, Jedidiah, Agur, Bin Jakeh, Lemuel, Ithiel, Koheleth.

Segment 3

And he uttered seven havalim (vanities, breaths). And what he saw no other man saw; and when he gathered in wisdom and ascended through the grades of wisdom he was called Koheleth. And he uttered seven havalim corresponding to the seven crowns above; and from every hevel a voice is made, and the world is sustained only by hevel.
