Section 5 of 16 in Shmini — 5 segments

Segment 1

R. Eleazar here adduced the verse: “And Aaron took him Elisheba, the daughter of Aminadab, the sister of Nahshon, to wife” (Ex. 6, 23). ‘Aaron’, he said, ‘acted fitly, copying the supernal model. “Elisheba” was destined for Aaron from the time of the Creation, just as “Bathsheba” was destined for David from the time of the Creation.

Segment 2

Both are one, but the one name refers to judgement, the other to mercy. When she was joined with David, it was for judgement, to wage war and shed blood. Here with Aaron it was for peace, for joy, for gladness and blessing. Hence with David she is called Bathsheba, and with Aaron Elisheba: Elisheba (lit. to seven) to show that she was joined to Grace; Bathsheba (daughter of seven) to signify that she inherited royalty and power.

Segment 3

R. Simeon said: ‘That which we have learnt of the verse “the voice of the trumpet” (Ex. 19, 19) is well said, and this is Jacob, who was raised up in the thought of the patriarchs; and they came forth together from within the trumpet, for the trumpet brings forth water and fire and air together, and out of them a voice is made. So the supernal Mother brought forth the patriarchs in one voice; and out of thought they were raised up together in one voice, and that voice is called “the voice of the trumpet”, and this is Jacob, who comprises the patriarchs together, and is called “voice”.
