Section 16 of 16 in Shmini — 2 segments

Segment 1

Ra'aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd). Fish and locusts do not require ritual slaughter; rather, the gathering of them is what makes them permitted. So too the Masters of the Academy: they do not require slaughter, but of them it is said, “And he expired, and was gathered to his people” (Gen. 49, 33). Just as the fishes of the sea have their life in the sea, so the disciples of the wise, the Masters of the Mishnah, have their life in the Torah, and if they are parted from it they die at once. As we have learnt of the Mishnah: in it they have multiplied like the fishes of the sea; and if those of the dry land go up into the water and do not know how to swim, they die. But man (these are the masters of Kabbalah, who are above), who is above them all — of him it is said, “and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air” (Gen. 1, 26).

Segment 2

For the Masters of the Mishnah are the tanninim (sea-serpents) — “the great dragon”, “the bar serpent” (Isa. 27, 1), corresponding to “and the middle bar in the midst of the boards” (Ex. 26, 28). When the tanninim, the Masters of the Mishnah, have a dispute among them and press hard questions upon one another, one swallows his fellow; and this is “a junior disciple who has not reached the stage of giving decisions, and gives them: he is liable to death”. But if they are equal to one another, and there is dispute and hard questioning among them, of them it is said: “Vaheb in Supha” (Num. 21, 14) — as has been explained, ahabah be-sophah, love is in her end. (End of Ra'aya Meheimna)
