Segment 1
until “he comes to Hebron”, that is, he comes to read and re-read it. “And there were Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai”: there they see great contrasts, unclean and clean, forbidden and permitted, punishments and rewards.
Segment 2
“Now Hebron was built seven years”: these are the seventy aspects of the Torah, for it has seventy faces, ten to every side. And “Hebron” is the Torah, and whoever labours in it is called a companion (chaver). “Before Zoan in Egypt”: as we have learnt, there is a Torah over against a Torah, namely the Written Torah and the Oral Torah. And this one (malchut) is Hebron, and it issues from the Written Torah, as it says, “Say to wisdom: You are my sister” (Prov. 7, 4). And this one “was built seven years”, and therefore she is called Bath-sheba. “Before Zoan in Egypt”, as it says, “And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt” (I Kings 5, 10).
Segment 3
“And they came to the brook of Eshcol”: these are the words of Agadah which strengthen faith. “And they cut from there a branch”: they teach from there general principles which rejoice the true believers and show them how all is reduced to one principle without deviation. But the sceptical and those who do not learn the Torah for its own sake find deviation, as it says, “and they carried it on upon a pole between two”.
