Segment 1א׳

תְּלָתָא אִינּוּן דְּדַחְיָין שְׁכִינְתָּא מֵעָלְמָא, וְגַרְמִין, דְּדִיוּרֵיהּ דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לָא הֲוֵי בְּעָלְמָא, וּבְנִי נָשָׁא צַוְוחִין וְלָא אִשְׁתְּמַע קַלֵּיהוֹן. וְאִלֵּין אִינּוּן: מַאן דְּשָׁכִיב בַּנִּדָּה, בְּגִין דְּלֵית מִסְאֲבוּ תַּקִּיף בְּעָלְמָא בַּר מִסְּאֲבוּ דְּנִדָּה. מִסְאֲבוּ דְּנִדָּה קַשְׁיָא מִכָּל מִסְאֲבוּ דְּעָלְמָא, אִסְתְּאַב אִיהוּ, וְכָל דְּמִתְקָרְבִין בַּהֲדֵיהּ יִסְתַּאֲבוּן עִמֵּיהּ, בְּכָל אֲתָר דְּאַזְלִין אִתְדַּחְיָיא שְׁכִינְתָּא מִן קַמַיְיהוּ.

There are three types of men who drive away the Shekinah from the world, making it impossible for the Holy One, blessed be He, to fix His abode in the universe, and causing prayer to be unanswered.

Segment 2ב׳

וְלֹא עוֹד, אֶלָּא דְּגָרִים מַרְעִין בִּישִׁין עַל גַּרְמֵיהּ, וְעַל הַהוּא זַרְעָא דְּיוֹלִיד, דְּכֵיוָן דְּיִקְרַב בַּר נָשׁ לְגַבֵּי נִדָּה, הַהוּא מִסְאֲבוּ דָּלִיג עֲלוֹי, וְיִשְׁתָּאַר בְּכָל שַׁיְיפִין דִּילֵיהּ, זַרְעָא דְּיוֹלִיד בְּהַהוּא שַׁעֲתָא, (ס"א מסאבו) מַשְׁכִין עֲלוֹי רוּחַ מִסְאֲבוּ. וְכָל יוֹמוֹי יְהֵא בִּמְסָאֲבוּ, דְּהָא בִּנְיָנָא וִיסוֹדָא דִּילֵיהּ אִיהוּ בִּמְסָאֲבוּ רַב וְתַקִּיף מִכָּל מְסַאֲבָא דְּעָלְמָא, דְּמִיָּד דְּקָרִיב בַּר נָשׁ לְגַבֵּי נִדָּה, הַהוּא מִסְאֲבוּ דָּלִיג עֲלוֹי, דִּכְתִּיב, (ויקרא ט״ו:כ״ד) וּתְהִי נִדָּתָהּ עָלָיו.

One is he who cohabits with a woman in the days of her separation. There is no impurity comparable with this. He defiles himself and all connected with him. The child born of such a union is shapen in impurity, imbibes the spirit of impurity, and its whole life is founded on impurity.

Segment 3ג׳

מַאן דְּשָׁכִיב בְּבַת אֵל נֵכָר, דְּאָעִיל בְּרִית קוֹדֶשׁ וְאָת קַיָּימָא בִּרְשׁוּ אַחֲרָא, דִּכְתִּיב, (מלאכי ב׳:י״א) וּבָעַל בַּת אֵל נֵכָר. וְתָנֵינָן, לֵית קִנְאָה קָמֵי קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, בַּר קִנְאָה דִּבְרִית קַדִּישָׁא, דְּאִיהוּ קַיָּימָא דִּשְׁמָא קַדִּישָׁא, וְרָזָא דִּמְהֵימָנוּתָא. מָה כְּתִיב (במדבר כ״ה:א׳) וַיָּחֶל הָעָם לִזְנוֹת אֶל בְּנוֹת מוֹאָב מִיַּד וַיִּחַר אַף ה' בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל.

Next is he who lies with a heathen woman, for he profanes herewith the sacred sign of the covenant which constitutes the support of the sacred Name and the essence of faith. As soon as “the people committed whoredom” with the daughters of Moab, the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel (Num. 25, 1-3).

Segment 4ד׳

רֵישֵּׁי עַמָּא דְּיָדְעוּ וְלא מִחוּ בִּידַיְיהוּ, אִתְעַנְשׁוּ בְּקַדְמִיתָא, דִּכְתִיב, (במדבר כ״ה:ד׳) קַח אֶת כָּל רָאשֵׁי הָעָם וְהוֹקַע אוֹתָם לָה' נֶגֶד הַשָּׁמֶשׁ. רִבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, מַאי נֶגֶד הַשָּׁמֶשׁ. נֶגֶד הַבְּרִית דְּאִקְרֵי שֶׁמֶשׁ, וַעֲלֵיהּ אִתְּמַר (תהלים פ"ד) כִּי שֶׁמֶשׁ וּמָגֵן ה' אֱלהִים. שֶׁמֶשׁ וּמָגֵן (רכ"ד ב'): דָּא בְּרִית קַדִּישָׁא. מַה שֶׁמֶשׁ זָרַח וְאַנְהִיר עַל עָלְמָא, אוּף הָכִי בְּרִית קַדִּישָׁא זָרַח וְאַנְהִיר גּוּפָא דְּבַּר נָשׁ. מָגֵן: מַה מָגֵן אִיהוּ לְאַגָּנָא עֲלֵיהּ דְּבַּר נָשׁ, אוּף הָכִי בְּרִית קַדִּישָׁא מָגֵן עֲלֵיהּ דְּבַּר נָשׁ, וּמַאן דְּנָטִיר לֵיהּ, לֵית נִזְקָא בְּעָלְמָא, דְּיָכִיל לְמִקְרַב בַּהֲדֵיהּ וְדָא הוּא נֶגֶד הַשָּׁמֶשׁ.

The leaders of the people, who did not endeavour to prevent them, were the first to be punished (Ibid. 4), and in every generation it is the leaders who are made responsible for all the members of the community in regard to the profanation of the sign of the covenant, which is “sun and shield” (Ps. 84, 12): as the sun gives light to the world, so does the holy sign give light to the body, and as the shield protects, so does the holy sign protect.

Segment 5ה׳

רֵישֵׁי עַמָּא, יִתָּפְסוּן בְּכָל דָּרָא וְדָרָא בְּחוֹבָא דָּא, אִי יָדְעִין וְלָא מְקַנְאִין לֵיהּ. בְּגִין דְּחוֹבָא דָּא עָלַיְיהוּ, לְקַנָאָה לֵיהּ לְקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא בְּהַאי בְּרִית, מַאן דְּאָעִיל קְדוּשָׁה דָּא בִּרְשׁוּתָא אַחֲרָא, עֲלֵיהּ כְּתִיב (שמות כ׳:ה׳) לֹא יִהְיֶה לְךָ אֱלֹהִים אֲחֵרִים עַל פָּנַי. לֹא תִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה לָהֶם וְלֹא תָעָבְדֵם כִּי אָנֹכִי ה' אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֵל קַנָּא וְכֹלָּא קִנְאָה חֲדָא. וְעַל דָּא אִתְדַחְיָיא שְׁכִינְתָּא מִקָמֵיהּ. מַאן דִּמְשַׁקֵּר בִּבְרִית קַדִּישָׁא דְחָתִים בִּבְשָׂרֵיהּ דְּבַּר נָשׁ, כְּאִילּוּ מְשַׁקֵּר בִּשְׁמָא דְּקוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, מַאן דִּמְשַׁקֵּר חוֹתָמָא דְּמַלְכָּא, מְשַׁקֵּר בֵּיהּ בְּמַלְכָּא, לֵית לֵיהּ חוּלָקָא בֶּאֱלָהָא דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, אִי לָא בְּחֵילָא דְתִיוּבְתָּא תָּדִיר. He who keeps it in purity is guarded from evil. But he who transfers this sign of holiness into a strange domain, breaks the commandment, “Thou shalt have no other gods but Me”; for to deny the king’s seal is equivalent to denying the king himself.
