Segment 1א׳

ר' יוֹסֵי בַּר' יְהוּדָה אָמַר, אִילוּ נְאֱמַר אֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת, מַשְׁמַע דְּהָכִי הוּא. הַשְׁתָּא דִּכְתִּיב וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת, מַשְׁמַע דְּעַל הָרִאשׁוֹנִים מוֹסִיף, מַה הָרִאשׁוֹנִים בְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב, אַף כָּאן בְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב.

R. Jose son of R. Judah said: Had it said “These are the names”, the sense would be that so it is. Now that it is written “AND these are the names”, the sense is that it adds to the former: as the former were the sons of Jacob, so here too the sons of Jacob.

Segment 2ב׳

אָמַר רִבִּי יְהוּדָה, חַס וְשָׁלוֹם, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דְּאָמַר קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא, (בראשית מ״ו:ד׳) אָנֹכִי אֵרֵד עִמְּךָ מִצְרַיְמָה, סַלְּקָא דַּעְתָּךְ דִּשְׁכִינְתָּא תֵּיחוֹת עִמֵּיהּ בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא (אמר ליה והא כתיב אנכי ארד עמך מצרימה, עמך) מַמָּשׁ, אֶלָּא, בְּשַׁעֲתָא דַּהֲוַת יְרִידָה לִבְנוֹהִי, נַחְתַּת שְׁכִינְתָּא, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, אָנֹכִי אֵרֵד עִמְּךָ מִצְרַיְמָה, וְאָנֹכִי אֲעַלְךָ גַּם עָלה, כָּל זִמְנָא דִּיהֲוֵי לָךְ עֲלִיָּיה, כִּבְיָכוֹל עֲלִיָּיה אִית לִי, וּבְשַׁעֲתָא דִּיהֲוֵי לָךְ יְרִידָה, כִּבְיָכוֹל אָנֹכִי אֵרֵד עִמְּךָ. וְעַד דְּמִית יוֹסֵף וְכָל אָחוּי, וַהֲוַת לוֹן יְרִידָה, קָמַת שְׁכִינְתָּא וְנַחְתַּת עִמְּהוֹן, כְּמָה דְּנַחְתּוּ אִלֵּין, כַּךְ נַחְתּוּ אִלֵּין.

Said R. Judah: God forbid! When the Holy One, blessed be He, said, “I will go down with you into Egypt”, could it enter your mind that the Shekinah went down with him at that very hour? Rather, at the hour when there was a descent for his sons, the Shekinah went down; and this is the meaning of the verse, “I will go down with you into Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again” (Gen. 46, 4): so long as you have an ascent, as it were, I have an ascent; and at the hour when you have a descent, as it were, “I will go down with you”. And when Joseph and all his brothers had died and they had a descent, the Shekinah arose and went down with them: as these went down, so those went down.

אָמַר (ס"א ר' יוסי בר' יהודה') ר' יְהוּדָה מַה כְּתִיב לְעֵיל מִנֵּיהּ, (בראשית נ׳:כ״ו) וַיָּמָת יוֹסֵף בֶּן מֵאָה וָעֶשֶׁר שָׁנִים וְגוֹ', בְּהַהִיא שַׁעֲתָא דְּמִית יוֹסֵף, וְכֻלְּהוּ שְׁבָטִין, וַהֲוָה לוֹן יְרִידָה, נַחְתּוּ בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל בְּגָלוּתָא, וּשְׁכִינְתָּא וּמַלְאֲכֵי עִלָּאֵי נַחְתּוּ עִמְּהוֹן, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב, וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת בְּנִי יִשְׂרָאֵל, דְּאִינּוּן אִתּוֹסָפוּ עַל קַדְמָאֵי לְמֵיחַת בְּגָלוּתָא.

Said R. Judah: What is written above it? “And Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old, etc.” (Gen. 50, 26). At that hour when Joseph died, and all the tribes, and they had a descent, the children of Israel went down into exile, and the Shekinah and the supernal angels went down with them; and this is the meaning of the verse, “And these are the names of the children of Israel” — that these were added to the former, to go down into exile.

Segment 4ד׳

אֲמַר לֵיהּ, אִי הָכִי, יַעֲקֹב הֲוָה מִית אוֹ לָא. אֲמַר לֵיהּ מִית. אֲמַר לֵיהּ, וּמַהוּ דִּכְתִּיב הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה אֵת יַעֲקֹב, אִי בְּחַיֵּי, אֵימָא אֵת יַעֲקֹב, וְאִי בָּתַר דְּמִית, אַפִּיק מִתַּמָּן אֵת יַעֲקֹב. אֶלָּא תָּא חֲזֵי, לָא אָמַר קְרָא הַיּוֹרְדִים מִצְרָיְמָה אֵת יַעֲקֹב, דְּעַד כְּעָן לָא הֲוַת יְרִידָה לְיַעֲקֹב, אֶלָּא הַבָּאִים, אוֹלִיפְנָא דְּאָתוּ עִמֵּיהּ דְּיַעֲקֹב, וְאָזְלוּ לְהוֹן, עַד דְּנַחְתּוּ אִלֵּין בְּגָלוּתָא, נַחְתּוּ אִלֵּין עִמְּהוֹן, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב וְאֵלֶּה שְׁמוֹת וְגוֹ'.

He said to him: If so, was Jacob dead or not? He said to him: He was dead. He said to him: Then what is the meaning of “who came into Egypt with Jacob”? If in his lifetime, let it say “with Jacob”; and if after he died, take “with Jacob” out of there. Rather, Observe: Scripture did not say “who went down into Egypt with Jacob”, since as yet there had been no descent for Jacob, but “who came”. We have learnt that they came with Jacob and went their way, until these went down into exile and those went down with them; and this is the meaning of the verse, “And these are the names, etc.”

Segment 5ה׳

ר' דּוֹסְתָּאי אָמַר, בְּכָל יוֹמָא וְיוֹמָא הֲווֹ אַתְיָין, וְאַזְלִין לוֹן, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב הַבָּאִים מִצְרַיְמָה, וְלָא כְּתִיב אֲשֶׁר בָּאוּ, וְהַיְינוּ דִּכְתִּיב הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה בְּקַדְמִיתָא אֵת יַעֲקֹב. וּלְבָתַר כַּד הֲוַת לוֹן יְרִידָה אִישׁ וּבֵיתוֹ בָּאוּ. וְתָּא חֲזֵי, בְּנֵי יַעֲקֹב כֻּלְּהוּ הַווֹ מֵתִין בְּהַהוּא זִמְנָא וְנַחְתּוּ אִלֵּין וְאִלֵּין.

R. Dostai said: Every single day they were coming and going their way; and this is the meaning of the verse, “who are coming into Egypt”, and it is not written “who had come”. And this is why it is written “who are coming into Egypt” first “with Jacob”, and afterwards, when they had a descent, “every man and his household came”. And Observe: the sons of Jacob were all of them dead at that time, and these and those went down.
