Segment 1
Another explanation: “Command the children of Israel, and say to them: My offering, My bread for My fire-offerings, My sweet savour.” R. Judah said: In an offering there is smoke, and there is savour, and there is sweet savour. Smoke is from the side of judgement, as it is written, “For then the anger of the Lord shall smoke” (Deut. 29, 19); “Smoke arose up in His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth devoured” (Ps. 18, 9). “My sweet savour”: mercy — “and the smell of your nose like apples” (S. S. 7, 9).
Segment 2
The Faithful Shepherd said: But both of them, smoke and savour, are in the nose (af), and the verses testify: one, “Smoke arose up in His nostrils”; and the second, “and the smell of your nose like apples”. And why is one, smoke, called judgement, and the second mercy? Rather, in the nose there are two windows; and of the left it is said, “Smoke arose up in His nostrils”. What is “arose”? Rather, from the heart, which is on the left, corresponding to gibbor (mighty). From the right a breath descends to it, to cool it and to still its anger, from the side of chesed, where the brain is. Chochmah is on the right: he who wishes to become wise, let him turn to the south. Binah is in the heart, toward the left: he who wishes to become rich, let him turn to the north. And therefore “Smoke arose up in His nostrils”: from binah toward chochmah, which is on the right; and it receives it with joy, with the melody of the Levites.
Segment 3
And this smoke rises only by means of fire, which kindles in the wood — these are limbs full of commandments, the wood of the burnt-offering. The masters of the Torah: the Torah kindles in them a fire in the strength of gevurah, and smoke rises in them. In binah is the smoke of the altar-pile.
