Segment 1

And therefore it is a precept of the Holy One, blessed be He, in the Torah, that a brother should take his brother's wife in levirate marriage, to make a son for his brother, so that he should not be lost from that world. And this is like the mystery of mixed kinds in the fringes, as they said: What I forbade you here, I permitted you here. I forbade you the mixed kinds of the world; I permitted you the mixed kinds of the fringes. I forbade you a brother's wife; I permitted you the levirate widow. As when one grafts apples or palms, kind with its own kind; and it is forbidden to graft a kind with what is not its kind. And of him it is said, “for man is the tree of the field” (Deut. 20, 19). But with the levirate widow they graft a kind with what is not its kind (Tikkunim, folio 19a; see there), so that the soul of the dead should not be lost (a variant reads: destroyed) — “that his name be not blotted out of Israel” (Deut. 25, 6).

Segment 2

And this is the mystery of gilgul (transmigration). A galgal (wheel) has no motion without a channel of water; so too, the channel of water is the mystery of the letter Vau, by which galgal becomes gilgul. And the mystery of the matter: as a wheel has no motion without a channel of water, so too the wheel is Yod, and it has no motion without the channel of water, which is Vau. The levirate widow is He. For this is binah (understanding), the son of Yod-He. With the letter Yod He created the world to come, a long world, which is Vau.

Segment 3

Therefore he who has no son is not of the children of the world to come; for the sea stands opposite it, and from it goes forth, from between them (Tikkunim, folio 72a), Vau, and from it many rivers are divided, which go around the world until they return to the sea from which they went forth. And therefore the verse says, “All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; to the place where the rivers go,” etc. (Eccl. 1, 7) — until they return as they went forth.
