Segment 1
Ra'aya Meheimna (the Faithful Shepherd). “From thirty years old and upward, even until fifty years old, everyone who comes to do the work of service and the work of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting” (Num. 4, 47). This precept is that the Levites should be singers in the Sanctuary. And although we have explained it above, here words must be renewed: for the priest is the one who offers the offering, and he is Michael; Levi is Gabriel, and it is he who must make music.
Segment 2
And the inner meaning of the matter: “By day the Lord will command His lovingkindness” (Ps. 42, 9) — this is chesed, the high priest; for Michael is a common priest beside his Master, and for all that he is a commoner beside his Master, he is king of the holy Hayoth. And let the blessing of a common man not be light in your eyes; and this is “by day the Lord will command His lovingkindness.”
Segment 3
“And in the night His song is with me” — this is gevurah (severity). “His song” (shiroh): “his firstling bullock (shoro), majesty is his” (Deut. 33, 17); “and the face of an ox on the left side” (Ezek. 1, 10) — and Gabriel is his messenger. And he must sing and make music in joy, with the wine of the Torah (to occupy himself, to send an offering before the King in joy; and one who has no leave), to occupy himself with the Torah; and he shall fulfil “Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches” (Lam. 2, 19).
