Segment 1א׳

כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמוֹר לָהֶם, כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, בְּלָשׁוֹן הַקֹּדֶשׁ. כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, בְּיִרְאָה. כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, בַּעֲנָוָה. אָמַר רִבִּי אַבָּא, כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, תָּאנָא, הַאי צֶדֶ"ק אִתְקְרֵי כֹּ"ה, דְּכָל דִּינִין מִתְעָרִין מִכֹּ"ה (נ"א מניה), וְהַיְינוּ דְּאָמַר רִבִּי אֶלְעָזָר, מַהוּ מַכָּה רַבָּה. (ס"א דכה) כְּלוֹמַר, מַכָּה מִן כֹּה. וּכְתִיב (שמות ז׳:ט״ז-י״ז) וְהִנֵּה לֹא שָׁמַעְתָּ עַד כֹּ"ה, כְּמָה דְּאַגְזִים מֹשֶׁה. וּכְתִיב (שמות ז׳:י״ז) בְּזֹאת תֵּדַע כִּי אֲנִי יְיָ, וְכֹלָּא חַד, וּכְתִיב (שמות ז׳:כ״ג) וְלֹא שָׁת לִבּוֹ גַּם לָזֹאת, דִּזְמִינָא לְחַרְבָּא אַרְעֵיהּ.

R. Abba said: ‘We have learned that KoH (on this wise) is the name of the Power whence all judgements come into action. But when Hesed (Grace) is joined to KoH the latter is sweetened. Hence the priest, who is derived from Hesed, is entrusted with KoH to have it blessed and sweetened. Thus the command was “On this wise (KoH) ye shall bless”, that is, by the influence of Hesed ye shall fill with blessing and make sweet the power of KoH in its relation to Israel, so that Rigour should not prevail.

וּמֵהַאי כֹּ"ה מִתְעָרִין דִּינִין. וּמִדְּאִתְחַבָּר עִמָּהּ חֶסֶד, אִתְבַּסְּמַת. וּבְגִין כַּךְ, אִתְמְסַר דָּא לַכֹּהֵן, דְּאָתֵי מֵחֶסֶד, בְּגִין דְּתִתְבָּרֵךְ וְתִתְבְּסָם כֹּ"ה, הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, כְּלוֹמַר, אַף עַל גַּב דְּהַאי כֹּה אִשְׁתְּכָחַת בְּדִינִין, תְּבַסְּמוּן לָהּ, וּתְבָרְכוּן לָהּ, דִּכְתִּיב כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, תְבָרַכוּ בְּהַאי חֶסֶד לְכֹ"ה, וּתְבַסְּמוּן לָהּ לָקֳבְלַיְיהוּ דְּיִשְׂרָאֵל, בְּגִין דְּלָא יִשְׁתַּכְּחוּן בָּהּ דִּינִין.

And from this KoH judgements are roused. And when chesed is joined with her, she is sweetened. And therefore this was handed to the priest, who comes from chesed, so that KoH should be blessed and sweetened. This is what is written, “On this wise you shall bless” — as if to say, even though this KoH is found in judgements, you shall sweeten her and bless her, as it is written, “On this wise you shall bless the children of Israel”: you shall bless with this chesed to KoH, and you shall sweeten her toward Israel, so that judgements should not be found in her.

הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ אֶת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אָמוֹר לָהֶם. אִמְרוּ לֹא כְּתִיב, אֶלָּא אָמוֹר, לְאַפָּקָא מִשֶּׁרָבּוּ הַפָּרִיצִים, דְּלָא מְפַרְסְמִין מִלָּה, דְּהָא לָא אִתְפְּקָדוּ לְפַרְסְמָא שְׁמָא, מַשְׁמַע דִּכְתִּיב אָמוֹר לָהֶם. אָמוֹר סְתָם. דָּבָר אַחֵר אָמוֹר כֵּיוָן דִּכְתִּיב כֹּה תְבָרַכוּ, אֲמַאי לָא כְּתִיב תֹּאמְרוּ. אֶלָּא תָּנֵי רִבִּי יְהוּדָה, אָמוֹר לָהֶם. זָכוּ לָהֶם, לֹא זָכוּ אָמוֹר סְתָם.

It says: “On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying (amor) unto them”. It is not written “ye shall say unto them”, parallel to “ye shall bless”.’ R. Judah taught that we have therefore to construe it thus: If they will be worthy, then [the blessing is] to them, but if not, then there is merely saying.

Segment 4ד׳

רִבִּי יִצְחָק פָּתַח, (דניאל י׳:ז׳) וְרָאִיתִי אֲנִי דָּנִיֵאל לְבַדִּי אֶת הַמַּרְאָה וְהָאֲנָשִׁים אֲשֶׁר הָיוּ עִמִּי לֹא רָאוּ אֶת הַמַּרְאָה וְגוֹ'. וְרָאִיתִי אֲנִי דָּנִיאֵל לְבַדִּי. וְהָא תָּנֵינָן, אִינְהוּ נְבִיאֵי, וְאִיהוּ לָאו נָבִיא, וּמַאן נִינְהוּ. חַגַּי זְכַרְיָה וּמַלְאָכִי. אִי הָכִי, אִתְעָבִיד קֹדֶשׁ חוֹל, וְהָא כְּתִיב לֹא רָאוּ, אֲמַאי דְּחִילוּ. וּבְדָנִיֵּאל כְּתִיב וְרָאִיתִי אֲנִי, וְלָא דָּחִיל. וְאִיהוּ לָאו נָבִיא, הָא חוֹל קֹדֶשׁ.

R. Isaac discoursed on the verse: “And I Daniel alone saw the vision; for the men that were with me saw not the vision”, etc. (Dan. 10, 7). ‘There is a tradition’, he said, ‘that those men were prophets, to wit, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi, whereas Daniel himself was not a prophet. There was thus a reversal of the relation of holy and common. For they, the holy men, were seized with fear and were not able to see the vision, whereas he, a common man, did see without fear.

אֶלָּא הָכִי תָּאנָא, כְּתִיב (תהילים כ״ז:ג׳) אִם תַּחֲנֶה עָלַי מַחֲנֶה לֹא יִירָא לִבִּי אִם תָּקוּם עָלַי מִלְחָמָה בְּזֹאת אֲנִי בוֹטֵחַ. בְּזֹאת, הָא דְּאַמָרָן זֹאת עַדְבָא חוּלָקֵיהּ, לְאִתְחַסָנָא, וּלְמֶעְבַּד לֵיהּ נוּקְמִין. וְתָנָא, עֲבַיד קוּדְשָׁא בְּרִיךְ הוּא לְדָוִד, רְתִיכָא קַדִּישָׁא עִם אֲבָהָתָא, כִּתְרִין עִלָּאִין קַדִּישִׁין דְּכֹלָּא, דְּאַחֲסִינוּ אֲבָהָתָא. וְתָאנָא, מָלְכוּ יָרִית דָּוִד לִבְנוֹי בַּתְרוֹי. וּבַאֲתָר מַלְכוּ דִּלְעֵילָּא, אִתָּקַף, וְאַחֲסִין הוּא וּבְנוֹי מָלְכוּ דָּא, דְּלָא אַעְדֵּי מִשׁוּלְטָנֵהוֹן לְדָרֵי דָּרִין.

This is explained, however, by the verse: “Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise up against me, in this (zoth) I will be confident” (Ps. 26, 3). The word “this” (zoth) is an allusion to the Providence presiding over David’s inheritance that will ensure it for him and will execute vengeance on his behalf. There is a teaching that the Holy One, blessed be He, prepared for David a Holy Chariot, adorned with the holy superior crowns of the Patriarchs. That remained an inheritance for David, and his kingdom was reserved in perpetuity for his descendants.
